Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Heli skiing in Canadian Rockies

 Poster: A snowHead
Poster: A snowHead
Hi there,

I am new to this forum and am looking for advice regarding heli skiing in Western Canada this winter.
My skills level can be rated as very fit expert skier used to any type of terrain/ conditions one can find in the Eastern North America. My favorite runs are off-piste or double diamond glades and steep cliffs/ monkey faces provided that snow conditions allow to ride them.
This will be my first heli skiing or Rockies powder trip so I don’t necessarily want to run Teton Gravity-like SuperSteep stuff but still expect to enjoy fluff on the steep side.
I did some research around the Web and Powder Magazine to find a range between MegaBucks Adventures in the Deep Wilderness and more family oriented experiences.
Say Pantheon Helisport on one side and RK Heli on the other with Canadian Mountain Holidays probably standing in the middle.
Is there anybody able to give an advice regarding reasonable budget heli skiing since this will be my first try and it will also be short (2 days or 3 max).
I wonder about the RK packages… They fit my schedule and budget. Is it too crowdy or unsatisfying ? Are the runs too tame for an very experienced skier trying his first heli trip ? I don’t want to ride kilometers of flat powder even if guess strong intermediate runs would probably be my max for a first try.

Any advice ??

Thanks!

Did two trips with TLH in the standard Bell 212 (10 guests/2 guides/2 groups). Gradients less than expected in the alpine but a lot more fun in the trees - would grade as red or single black diamond. Mixed groups didn't cause a problem but can see how they might (we were lucky that everyone - in both groups - was reasonably competent). Gradient's biggest limitation was snow stability as you might imagine.

Suggestion only that if you're doing shorter trips and want to get a bit more radical then pick an outfit using small helos - A-stars or the like. TLH do that and run a great operation, have also heard good things about "Peace Reach".

BicMaster, welcome to snowheads, as you're only going for a short time have you thought about heli-skiing in Europe first. We can offer heli-skiing from La Rosiere, the pickup point is just over the border in Italy, the lifts are tremendous value and you could ski the Ruitor Glacier, according to the Daily Mail Ski Magazine the 3rd best off-piste run in the world. Don't ask me how they grade them but at 20kms long the Ruitor is an unforgettable experience. We've an ad in snowShops and you can find details on our website www.tracksvacations.com
