Help!!
Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better!
Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

[Edit 12.1.05: Since this story was first reported it's emerged that the accident happened two valleys aways from Champoluc - above Alagna, which is on the linked Monterosa ski area]
Today's Sun newspaper is reporting the death of a British skier, Stephen Rawson, who plunged 300ft after losing control off piste. The accident happened near Champoluc in the Val d'Aosta, Italy. This is the brief
news report.
Can anyone give a first-hand account of conditions in that area at the moment?

If you don't know it, Punta Indren is not a good place to go off piste if you don't know what you're doing & exactly where you're going.
Well, the person's real but it's just a made up name, see?

Punta Indren is only accessed from the old cable car out of Bocchetta in the Alagne valley. He would had had to take an off-piste route, Salati or the Andaluce valley to get back into the Gressoney lift network There is no piste option. If the weather was anything less than good vis' he would be in trouble. The exposure to rocks is always there but he should have been able to get back to Gabiet if he knew the route and then get into the lifts system to take him back over to Champoluc.
There is a new lift out of the Alagne valley which would take him upto Passo de Salati and straight into the Gressoney pistes but this is much lower than Punta Indren. If the weather was poor I would expect the Bochetta cable car to Indren to be closed therefore forcing peple onto marked pistes. The old lift doesn't run all the time anyway because of its poor performance, they would not need much reason to shut it down for day. For this reason I would imagine the valley was in good weather.
