Poster: A snowHead

We have found some cheap flights from chambery for mid march, can you advise on the best nearby resorts. It is a group of 8 students, with some beginners needing lessons and some more advanced skiers. A few people have told us cormayeur, what do you think of that? And if you have any advice on the best places to find a nice cheap chalet it would be greatly appreciated!
Thanks

Loads...simply take your pick out of any of
Tignes / Val D'Isere
Les Arcs / La Plagne
La Rosiere
3v..
and many more. I think you need to do some more thinking on 'what's important in the resort' to help narrow it down a bit...

Well, the person's real but it's just a made up name, see?

We are all young so good apres would be nice, and ski in and out would be a bonus. But we are all students and on a tight budget so really cant expect the perfect holiday. Somewhere close and easy to get transfers from chambery. Is snow more or less guaranteed at all resorts in march or is it best to go to a glacier resort. what do you think of alpe d'huez and doesn't sound great. Meribel looks a great place and cheap chalets but how is the snow there in mid to late march.
Thanks

impossible to say, really, and Meribel itself isn't very high. But there should be be plenty of snow throughout the 3 Valleys area.

Hi Skidmark. I would try Les Arcs area and in particular Vallandry area. It's a lot cheaper than say Val D'Isere or possibly Les Arcs itself. It's so easy to get into the main Les Arcs ski area but without the manic queues of Les Arcs itself. Try Skihiver chalets (I'm going next week on HB for £259) they may have deals in March too, but it is a busy time of year. Also, as you're on a budget you can get the train up from Chambery to Landry then a taxi (20 mins). Train is about £13 each way. Also, if you want ski lessons try skinewgen - I used them last year for me and my kids, brilliant. I shall say no more as I'm sure you'll receive plenty of advice from others. Good luck.

I would suggest Valmorel. It's the first valley before the 3 Valley's resorts so very much over looked and under estimated.

I would try La Tania. It is small and compact but has a great atmosphere and places like The Ski Lodge really go off at Apres. I also really like the bar in Hotel Telemark. The resort itself is at 1400m but snow coverage is maintained back to resort throughout the season. It's an integral part of the 3 Valleys too so you won't be lacking in KMs of piste. Chambery airport to La Tania is about an 1hour and quarter, half the distance to Tignes, Val d'Isere, Les Arcs etc. Visit www.latania.co.uk for all you need to know about La Tania.

second vote for la tania, if you want to party cheapish have lots to ski and the option of going high up it would be hard to beat. Meribel can have some cracking deals that time of year in chalets as well.... and the drinking isnt too expensive if you know where to go...

Pick somewhere with a ski school that has a good reputation. A good introduction to skiing will make or break the holiday for your beginners. On that basis I'd say that all of the Courchevel villages and Meribel offers a good choice of Brit-run ski schools, as does Vallandry in Les Arcs.

Thanks, La Tania looks great.
Honestly do you think it would be easier and not a lot cheaper to go with someone like crystalski though? Went with them last year and it was great. Just dont think we will save lots of money going on our own and it will save the hassle of finding ski passes, lessons and food.

Book your flights (if you havent already done so). Then keep an eye out for the bargains - about 4 weeks before you want to go. With the way the euro is it might be cost effective to consider a catered chalet (wine included!). Heading to La Tania myself so it would also get my vote. Only negative might be is that complete beginners might find it tricky skiing back - but that's part of the fun!
You might be right about a package being cheaper if you get a good deal - but you probably wont get the quality/comfort/value/enjoyment. There's another thread on here about a bloke taking his Vectra as accommodation - worth considering?

And love to help out and answer questions and of course, read each other's snow reports.

If you go independent, fly on a Sunday rather than a Saturday. Flights are much cheaper on Sundays as most accommodation operates from Saturday to Saturday. La Tania specialists Ski Deep, Ski42 and Mercury Ski all operate Sunday to Sunday. I can highly recommend Ski Deep. Hotel Telemark are flexible on dates so they could be another option and they have that great bar I mentioned in my previous post.
