Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

What is there to do in Innsbruck?

Will have a few hours to kill in Innsbruck next week and as we have never been are there any "must see" sights or good (window)shopping available?

Well according to paulio, there is the quite literally bonkers Swarovski museum... see thread in resorts on picturesque Austrian resorts.

It's a nice city in any case. Depends on how long you have and whether it's day or night, but if it was me, I would take a walk through the old town area, where you will kind of come across most of the sights as it were, and then have coffee and cakes in one of the Kaffeehaus places. If you have a bit more time, we enjoyed the alpine museum, with all things mountain and ski related. It kind of goes on a bit, but is pretty good.

The shops in the old town are mainly typical trinkety type Austria shops, but the main shopping street (Maria-Theresia) is more modern shops for non-tourists.

If you have even longer, you can of course ski right from Innsbruck itself. The bus to Igls runs from the main bus interchange and takes about 10 minutes.

If you want lunch and fancy a change from the Austrian meat & potatoes style of meal, there is a nice Greek restaurant near the bus station, and a Chinese, Thai and Mexican that are all good. If you want really excellent Austrian food, the Ottoburg in the old town is amazing.

And of course there is now even a funicular/cable car from within the city to the Nordpark ski area.

Louis, The old town is nice and plenty of nice coffee shops - try to sample some Zwikl (spelling?) Beer if you can - cloudy beer with no additives etc and looks pretty minging but one of the best beers I've tasted. You could also take a trip up to the ski jump - 10 mins from town I think. well worth a visit to get a scale of what these nutters actually do.
This is all assuming that you can still walk after the approach to Innsbruck airport - one daunting approach. We did it in March when there was a major storm in Europe (Munich airport was closed for example and you may recall a plane in Hamburg having to cancel a landing at last minute as it's wing appeared to touch the runway Shocked ) - we all enjoyed it though as we'd had quite a few beers in Edinburgh airport before we left wink

Louis, General sight seeing things in Innsbruck:

In the Old Town there is the Goldenes Dachl or Golden Roof from 15th Century.

You can visit the Bergisel Ski Jump. You'll see that from the top of the jump the competitors have a fine view of the graveyard of the Basilika Wilten Toofy Grin The interior of this church is lavishly decorated in the rococo style.

Nice zoo too, all animals native (or used to be native eg bears) to the mountains.
