Poster: A snowHead

Hi Snowheads,
Just shopping around for breakdown insurance for our drive to the Alps. For a 20 year old car (but it is a rock solid Volvo estate, more reliable than most 5 year old cars I would wager) the choices seem to come down to AA - good but expensive, or I have found "National Breakdown" more reasonably priced but the policy sample they have sent claims they do not cover a breakdown in first 48 hours of the policy, which is not much use if you are intending to drive 700 miles in the first 48 hours and not much thereafter. Currently in negotiations with them over that one.
As I know the car so well I am tempted to wing it but Mrs Trenmold will not be happy if anything does go wrong!
Any recommendations of other companies worth checking?

Most Euro policies we have looked at have the 48 hour rule. Surely if you start the policy two days before you go you will be covered for the long drive?!

Anyway, snowHeads is much more fun if you do.

You need to check your specific requirements too. For instance I am usually the only driver and I believe the only ones who would get me and the car and other passengers back if I was unable to drive is the RAC. They are similarly priced to the AA.

Surely the 48 hour rule is from date of purchase so as to prevent you trying to purchase the insurance after you have broke down. I can only see this being a problem if you have left it so late to arrange that you are leaving tomorrow. Though I stand to be corrected. Alternatively try your bank. Ours is with the Rac through our barclays bank account and covers us all year for breakdown and travel insurance

daveqpr, I think you are probably right after emailing them. Will probably go with National Breakdown as it seems fair value for what I actually want. Eurotunnel and many others will not cover older vehicles, which is understandable. We are AA members but even with their 30% discount it is still a lot more than NB.
Only driving so that we can take the dog, it would be a lot less hassle (and expense) to hop on the train from St Pancras.
