Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Going out to all people who have done ski seasons...Where is the best place to do a ski season?

 Poster: A snowHead
Poster: A snowHead
My plan is to do a ski season for 4 months in Europe but I have one problem...I have never been skiing (apart from the snowdome) hence I need your help! I basically need an all round type of place.

In priority order; Culture (a good place to be/good living/a good mix of people and not just all british/good chill out places and coffee shops and villages/resorts to go to nearby), Skiing (beginners through to advanced...i am a quicker learner so should progress quickly plus i am there for the seaon and will take extensive lessos), apres ski and money (there is a budget but slightly higher than your average).....and hot girls would also be a bonus (just being honest)

I plan to get there at the start of Jan hence time is of the essence and need to get soething sorted very quickly!

Thanks in advance

Depends on what your opinion of culture is.

Tignes/Val d'Isere ring bells.

Dude

Stop stressing about where you're going to go. Work on finding accomodation and accept the resort that comes with it.

If you're under 30 and like a beer then you'll have fun in any of Val D'Isere / Tignes / Kitz / St. Anton / Meribel / Val Thorens / Morzine / Ischgl / Mayrhofen

Some of those resorts are better than others (IMHO) for learing, but then look at the responses on your st. anton thread - whats right for 'one person' isn't right for another, so as you know nothing then at least if you take one of my list above you'll find like minded people and generally a reasonabl to excellent 'seasonaire scene'

Otherwise just stick a pin in a map..

I see what your saying but I will only do this season once and so need to try and get as close to my criteria as possible. Apres ski is important but not the most important thing as my priority list states. However, the skiing and the beauty of the resort/town/village is important

I had my heart set on Kitz but got nowhere with accomodation and then i moved onto St Anton but again i faced the same problem. So now i need to widen the search.

Keep ure opinions coming

Livethedream24, well if you want an attractive resort. Then don't go to Tignes, it isn't pretty architecture.

Which is exactly why you need to give up on finding some other persons view of 'the perfect resort' and just find somewhere where there is accommodation for the season. Chances are that there's still places available in france. In my experience that's the easiest place to find seasonaire accommodation given the Frechies love for their 'skiing shoeboxes'

Livethedream24, haven't we had this thread before? I suggest the Oisans:

- choice of ten resorts on one ski pass
- variety of restarants/bars/etc
- villages, local museums etc to visit (you did say 'culture')
- 40 minutes from Grenoble
- another three (at least) resorts within and hour and a half drive
- variety of non-skiing activities in resorts/nearby

Don't know about the hot women. I myself am spoken for, but I'm sure there are others, especially if you are good looking and have wads of wonga.

I don't understand why someone would want to do a ski season when they've never been skiing before Confused Livethedream24, you might hate it! Shocked wink Wouldn't it be best to at least have a holiday out there first?

I did my season in Méribel-Mottaret. Admittedly it was eons ago, but it was great. A huge ski area, great snow pretty much all season, but the nightlife was rather limited (unless we went down to Village). I think you'll enjoy it wherever you go. Concentrate on finding work/accommodation first. I got the job and then just went where the TO sent me...

It's a compact and bijou ski area where you can easily walk from one part of the slops to the lifts for another part of the slopes. It's ideal for beginners/intermediates as it has a range of suitable slopes to allow you to progress well, and when you get good enough there is plenty of off-piste that's untracked for weeks as noboday any good ever goes there. Off-slope the nightlife is incredibly tame even by french standards, and there's nothing to do as it's an artificial ski-resort built right up a mountain.

Lizzard,

If Bertie is fed up with this conversation, I can understand why. I've replied to a number of the Originators postings and given information about resorts and boot fitting. Bertie has spent alot of time responding to his postings and again there seems to be no progress.

I can appreciate that he wants to go away for the season and hasn't skied before but sometimes the more information he gets from other Snowheads the more confused he will get.

Livethedream24,

Just go anywhere and make the most of wherever you go to. Good Luck.

Er, can you enlighten me as to what is supposed to happen in these resorts to visitors over 30 who enjoy a beer then?? Been to the lot of them and - shockingly for an old codger (let's just say 30 was a year or two ago....) - also had fun!! Shocked Mind afterwards the trusty Zimmer frame had to go in for a full service each time and my arthritis didn't half give me some gyp with the cold.....Not like in the old days ....when we all had leather boots ....if we could afford boots at all...and you could do a full season in St Moritz for under a tenner... and get a week's beer for 2 shillings....but that was after taking 10 days to get there on the express train from Victoria....and it wasn't like now for ski lifts...no, we had to walk up....the lucky ones managed to hire a donkey...and then there was the wooden skis... don't make 'em like they used to....fancy mountain restaurants?!....we took bread.....frozen solid...no butter in them days....and another thing..... Zermatt was always my first choice for a season in Europe, mainly as visas are so difficult for the US, but accomodation is unlikely to be cheap/available now. Its definately pretty, theres a lot of skiing and the night life is good (Hennustall apres takes some beating, and on a sunny day the view from Olympia is stunning) but it is expensive, and not perfect for learning I wouldn't say.

I think everyone has missed the most important factor.....The People..

I did 5 seasons ranging from Tignes, Chamonix, Squaw Valley and La Plagne and the best overall was La Plagne...not your obvious choice but a great group of people made it. Some more glamorous neighbours had more staff issues than you can imagine and everyone hated each other ! Even the amazing snow didn't matter in some of the resorts. In La Plagne I was happily skiing fresh snow a week after a snowfall and had fresh tracks down the North Face every day for a week at one point! Tignes was great...Squaw epic in some ways but not a patch on a European season on other levels...Chamonix for me the biggest let down. Amazing mountains but just too big IMO to get a good vibe going where you know everyone. Too many blokes as well Laughing !

In summary - so much more makes a ski season than the obvious stuff you are perhaps looking for. Trouble is you won't know the people beofre you go !

Interesting that you put the word 'culture' first. Museums, fine arts, music not part of it though.

I agree with 'not just all british'. Obviously those based outside London are a waste of time.

Skiing range could cover many places - but implication is you are starting from scratch. Lively apres ski does not always go with culture. 'Hot girls' ? I am told Thailand is very good.

I would say Austria might be good. Somewhere close to Innsbruck or Salzburg maybe ? Kitz, Soll, Saalbach ?

Culture? backpack round Europe if you want that. Ski resorts have a culture all of their own.

You're over thinking this one.
