I've noticed a lot of people rating themselves as 'level 6-7' (for example) on other threads especially when asking about equipment. What do these levels mean? Is it to do with how many weeks skiing or an official instruction/ability term...?
Dread to think what level I am. I had lessons way back when I used to go skiing with the school (when skis were long and skinny and winters infinitely snowy). Is there a minus scale...?

Thanks for that. It all makes sense now. Although I don't really fit into any of those categories as such...
However, it's given me a good idea of what size skis to rent...

It's also inversely proportional to the size of hangover at the time too. I can ski from anywhere from 4 to 7 depending on liver levels.

I'm probably a 4 or 5 if I had to be measured. Although I've done a season and 12 other weeks, I only had instruction for three of those weeks and that was over 20 years ago. I can get down any colour piste but I have no style whatsoever...

BTW, on the S&R scale, I would rate myself between 6 & 7 - but I would expect grades 1-4 would all be passed through in the first two days for many people.
On the Kuoni one, I would be between 5 & 6.
On the Profeet, almost 6 (i.e. I have most of the things they say a level 6 skier has, but not quite all of them).
On Warren Smith, I would be group 3.
On reachyourpeak, almost a 5.

Jeez, how confusing...
I think I'm a 4 on the Kuoni, Profeet and Reachyourpeak ones...
Probably only a 2 on the Warren Smith one...
I realise I should have had more lessons at some point but it's too late now, I'll just stick to bimbling about and looking reet daft...

Most of these scales are bloody useless. I quite like the Reach Your Peak one because it seems to accept that you don't have to be good off-piste to be good on-piste. I'd like to think that I'm a very good on-piste skier (better than most I would hope), however, I ski very little off piste, so am pretty pants at it. On most of the scales, it would be impossible for me to exist.

Axsman, as I explained on that thread I do not fit onto that scale. The best description I've heard of my skiing is: You look like your smoking a cigar and sipping brandy.

If you ever need to get an idea of how good someone else is, ask them their level and the subtract 2.

The other problem with rating yourself is that one has good and bad days. Some days it almost seems to click into place, and other days I fall over just getting off chair lifts...
