Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Alpe d’Huez

Having skied L2A for the last 2 years, I was a bit annoyed not being able to find a good package deal there for New Year 09, however..... 18 hours of internet searching and much high street travel agent visiting later - I have managed to find a great deal in Alpe d’Huez (sorry Charlotte Sad ), so I'm asking for the usual resort advice and specifically Chalet Edelweiss (Thomas Cook Catered) - looking at the piste map it isn't as close to the lifts as I'd like.... hope I've made the right decision Puzzled Any advice would be welcome snowHead

williams691, I think that is up near the altiport above Les Bergers. It should be ski in/out. Ski down to the lifts at Les Bergers and peel off the piste down at the end of the afternoon to the chalet. I haven't stayed in the chalets but have used apartments in Les Bergers twice. Quite a hike though down to Les Bergers (where there are a few bars, restaurants and shops) and even further into town. Quite a steep hike up the hill back too. Loads on here about the skiing at ADH, it's good I think, comparable to LDA (but without easiski). One of the things I really like about it is that you can "travel" to other villages such as Auris, Villard, Oz, etc.

I would pick ADH over L2A every time. Really nice pistes (especially to the villages mentioned and at the Pic Blanc) and nice lunch spots in the neighbouring villages. Can't comment on your place to stay..

You won't regret picking Alpe D'Huez over LDA, it's a much better resort in my opinion. I doubt you'll ever go back to LDA after this holiday, I know I wouldn't! Sorry, don't know the accommodation.

williams691, if you're missing LDA, you're going to be extremely well situated for the altiport & the helicopter day trip. Assuming it's running over New Year, of course... but if it is, perhaps you should treat yourself snowHead
Alpe D'Huez is a great place, btw - enjoy!

You can't get much closer. Piste goes right past the balcony of the chalet and it give you really easy access both to and from the lifts! Very Happy

Well spotted Katski - I was doing my usual "man looking" Embarassed and missed the fact that there is a piste close to the chalet, my online piste map is a bit blurred though so that's my excuse - hopefully there will be enough snow at start of Jan to ski down to the main lifts from the chalet Very Happy Anyone know how much a Heli trip to L2A is?

williams691, Our chalet is pretty much opposite on the other side of the piste so I should know really wink You should have no problem skiing down to the main lifts either - you can do it now and we have heaps of snow here! It is a nice easy run down in the morning as well. I think the helicopter to LDA was about 63 Euros return last year but haven't checked this years prices yet....will be in the ball park though.

Awesome - Heli-skiing it is then snowHead Glad to hear the snow has been-a-falling, so just to clarify - which lift from town gets me to the top and is there more than one "route" up?

Le Printemps de Juliette is a very pretty place with good food. There was a chap playing a keyboard and singing when we were there. Not necessarily a "young" place but enjoyable.
Its on the way up the main street on the right.

The restaurant in bergers with the big neon kronenbourg sign over it. Really friendly staff and good food. One of the waiters there used to live near Xscape castleford and always asked "did you have a good day SKYing?" ...... now i always refer to it as SKYing.

it's funny that. I have a French friend who speaks quite good English (certainly better than my French) but he has big problems with this. I keep telling him that "ski" is pronounced the same in French and English but he keeps forgetting.

We had a great lunch over the summer in La Crémaillère on Route d'Huez. A few hundred yards down from the tourist information as if you were heading out of town.

BTW - I'll also be in town over New Year. Watch out for clueless bloke trying not to wipe out.

Anyone got some gen on the famous 10 mile long black run (longest in Europe I'm told). I've had conflicting info, some say it's more a challenging red - whereas some say it's actually quite technical! Does this route down take casualties every year like some of the steep blacks in L2A, or is it a bit less extreme Skullie Finally is it the only way to ski off the top...

williams691, the long black is the Sarenne. I couldn't see why it was marked black - it would certainly qualify as the least steep black in the resort. The bottom bit is a bit flat, but rather pretty. I enjoyed the whole run. It is not at all like the steep blacks in L2A.

There are alternatives off the top (eg the tunnel), but that side, the runs are steeper than the Sarenne.

The Sarenne is a very enjoyable run if there is good snow cover. The top is far more challenging than the bottom, which follows a track through trees at the bottom of the valley and is quite flat. The top is no way as difficult as the Tunnel! You can pick up the Sarenne further down and avoid Pic Blanc. I suspect that it is black because once you are on you can't get off till the bottom. Other must do blacks are Col de Cluy and La Fare IMO. Also restaurant at Alpette (bottom of Les Rousses) and Chardons (under drag lift and turn left) v. good. Thinking about it ... why am I going to Meribel next month and not ADH ... Ref. Skiing off the top its the Sarenne or the Tunnel (or the lift down)

Thanks for that, sounds awesome, what about some good long reds then as a warm up - any recommendations? It's nice when you get to a resort you've never visited and know exactly where to head for on day one! I know half the fun is discovering new routes and I'm looking forward to that, but when it's busy at the lifts it's always good to know where to go! Very Happy

Im off to ADH on Jan 3. Travelling with my 5 best friends. Spent a packet on the holiday and us poor students are looking for a few nice cheap places to eat. Were staying in Ours Blanc which is pretty central i think so anywhere around there would be cool. Any other advice would also be much appreciated.

williams691, The top of the runs down from the 2nd stage of the DMS (Chamois I think) are good. I like the run down from DMS Stage 1 to Oz too. It can be nearly deserted early. Easier are the runs down to Villard Reculas although mainly blues.

williams691, Don't know what the runs are like but it looks lovely out towards Vaujany. Check out the webcam http://www.vaujany.com/fr/hiver/accueil.php

scrubyjoe, can't help I'm afraid, nowhere seemed majorly cheap when we were out there in the summer. Even the little Casino supermarket was quite a bit more expensive than it's bigger cousin at the bottom at Bourg d'Oisans.

scrubyjoe, We (me and 7 mates) will be jetting in on the 3rd also. Staying in les bergers apartments like last year. Spent most the evenings last year in smithys near the iglo night club, just happened to be ALOT of UEA students in there that week so very enjoyable but not very cheap.

Me and my mates are staying in Ours Blanc cause les bergers was booked out. Any info on nice cheap places to eat?? Lets hope for a nice 30cm dump of snow on Jan 2nd Very Happy

scrubyjoe, The Roi Larde in the old part of town does a good pizza and is reasonably cheap for eating out. There are also a couple of take away place in the arcade near the Ours Blanc.

williams691, Enjoy, but apart from the tunnel most of their reds are not as steep as Bellecombe here, and the Sarenne is a good marketing ploy. I've never managed to ski it because every time I've gone over it's been shut - even when they advertise it's open. Evil or Very Mad Very different 'feel' over there - much more cruisy and less challenging, but the lower runs are prettier, and Arno does some awsome off piste that I've never had a chance to try ...

Picadilly, Eyeopener, Perhaps you should actually be more specific? If you tell people you think one resort is pretty rubbish you should say why. rolling eyes

a good thought Arno, but the south facing slopes are ravaged on the GLA, strangely, the angle looks right, actually taken from the Grand Galbert (I might have a pic from the GLA to compare)

Changing subject just a little,

Where is cheapest place for ski servicing (that's still an adequate service)? Do you know the price?

We are booked into Chalet Le Lac Blanc "70m from main lift & 100m from ski school meeting point" so if it's close to there it'll be handy. Getting skis serviced at home is £25 so I'll wait until I'm in the resort if that's better.

Sarenne II near the bottom of the DMC will do the best job IMO. Doubt there's too much variation in pricing but could be wrong
