Gatwick suspended its operations for four hours this morning, as its operators slowly cleared its only piste of snow. Here is a misquote from The Times:
The Times wrote: |
BA is also fuming. "There is sophisticated weather forecasting at an airport like Gatwick," a spokesman said. "It is the world's busiest single piste airport and it took them four hours to clear the piste." |
Source: http://www.timesonline.co.uk/tol/travel/news/article5324436.ece
Should airports operate like ski areas and just leave snow where it is?
Should aircraft be fitted with cross-country skis?
Should Gatwick be turned into a Lapland-style theme park?

Ha! Quote from the BAA website:
"Gatwick Airport apologises for the inconvenience this may have caused to passengers’ travel plans and we are continuing to work closely with our airline and other business partners to return to a normal operation as quickly as possible."
MAY have caused? There flights are landing and taking off anything up to 6 hours late, assuming they haven't been cancelled. BAA has to be right up there as a contender for the worst-run company in Britain and its mealy-mouthed attempt at an apology just adds insult to injury. The sooner they are forced to sell some airports the better.

Well I was surprised to see snow smattered across cars and gardens when I left the house this morning - I hadn't heard snow was forecast overnight/this morning (reporting from the dizzy heights of Crystal Palace hills)

At 15% VAT, that represents a price reduction - or was your previous price VAT-inclusive also?

Well I'll be jetting out of Gatwick a week Saturday. I hope the same doesn't occur. I remember last year there was fog delaying flights before christmas.

I remember that, it was one of the most fustrating six hours of my life sitting in the airport. We should have got a good afternoons skiing but instead arrived after the lifts had closed.

Fog much more likely than snow as a cause of delays. I recall being bussed from Birmingham to East Midlands airport many years ago, after a long delay en route for Salzburg. My 4 year old daughter was getting very fed up. On the coach across to East Midlands she asked me "are we in Austria yet?". No, I said, we're still in England "O No!" she wailed loudly, "This is taking FOREVER!". Everyone on the coach cheered, to her intense embarassment. Sadly, there is no foolproof way of getting to a ski resort without delays.
If an airport which is not accustomed to snow is hit, delays are inevitable. Geneva can be severely disrupted by snow; it was closed for a whole Sunday, a few years ago, with about 15cms of snow.

I had the enjoyment waiting 6 hours at Gatwick this morning and having the fun of going through security twice after they cancelled the first flight then shuffled us like cattle back to the Flybe check in desks !!

Beverley, how will you know where to check in? (or indeed which Terminal?) Are you being met by a rep?

Yoda, Good point, thank you. I've just rung them. They say a Skiworld person will be there at South terminal to meet us and that we are flying with Titan. Never heard of them, but hope they are ok. We've not used Skiworld before but so far (i.e. booking etc.,) they've been efficient and helpful, so hope it all goes smoothly.

Beverley, I hope so too. The name "Titan" has historically been associated with interesting journeys as I recall......

Maybe this is the same Titan that sells river cruises on the Rhine to see the Christmas markets. That was the last journey I enjoyed one-to-one with my father before he died. They were/are first-rate tour operators.

Beverley, The only Ryanair return flight I have ever made was flown by a Titan aircraft and crew. The 737 aircraft was old, but appeared in good shape. The crew were pleasant, and the service was prompt.

Oh ok. Now is not a time to think of my slightly nervous flying disposition.
My father did ask who was flying us and I didnt know. Best not mention it otherwise he will be investigating the airline and interrogating the pilot prior to his daughter setting foot on their planes.
Fingers crossed

achilles, Thank you for posting this link. Well, they sound/look ok. I have been spoilt by Swiss Air for my last few trips, but am sure Titan will be fine.
So long as they stay up that's all I ask
All packed and ready for bed.
