I am taking my boyfriend for his first snowboard trip and have found some cheap accomodation in Servoz which seems to be cut off from the rest of the world!!
does anyone have any opinions on servoz- can you get a beer new years eve! how easy is it to get to the slopes and are there many restaurants about,
basically accom there is 360 E for the 2 of us- RO, whereas i'm looking at £1000 in chamonix (HB)and there'll sting us for wine!!
other option is Les ars in SC ut my bloke doesn't fancy the drive from geneva-isit a bad drive?

Servoz; nice little town, but not somewhere for a young couple IMV. Beer likely to be in a small hotel.
Centre of any town in the area, Megeve or St Gervais perhaps (not us we're booked) would be better for bars. Might also be better for boarding. Try a few French immobilier.

Sorry but what is SC? ( I am old so not up on much two or three word acronyms )
The drive from Geneva to Les Arcs can be an utter pig or a complete doddle depending when you do it!
Which village/area Les Arcs are you looking at?

CP, self catering?
Without traffic the drive from Geneva to Arc 1800 is 2hr45m and normally very straightforward, along a dull motorway or for some of the time around a very scenic lake. It can be longer than that in traffic, and hellish on a Saturday in half term (but the same can be said for most of the French resorts).

Might be worth having a look at the Les Arcs website for SC, sorry - Self Catering, in Bourg St Maurice.
I had a look last week and there were some cheap apartments available for New Year week.
It's a 7 minute ride on the funicular from Bourg to Arc 1600. Although it's quiet quiet in the town it doesn't bother us as there's a decent choice of bars and restaurants.
You can get the train from Geneva to Bourg so you would not necessarily need a car. However, a car could come in handy as I think a week's lift pass for Les Arcs will give you a day's skiing in Val D'Isere or Tignes - both a half hour drive away and well worth a visit.
I'm sure other SH's will confirm the point about the lift pass shortly....

If you do drive to les arcs don't be a cheapstake skip the toll roads as this turns a manageable just over 2 hours in good traffic into a miserable 4.

dizzymink, Are you hiring a car to get to Servoz from Geneva? If so, you have lots of ski areas to choose from.....going up the road the nearest is Les Houches which would probably suit your boyfriend as I presume they have enough snow in the town to open the beginners' lifts (Le Tourchet, beside the skating rink) which are separate from the main ski area(Bellevue and Prarion access points) and a lot cheaper. If they are not open you can take him straight up the mountain and enjoy the stunning views! Going back down the road you have the St.Gervais area which would also suit a beginner. Beer, wine etc all available in Servoz; restaurants exist, it is France after all and they do celebrate New Year's......but if you miss the sweet sound of English you can always head into Cham or stay in LH after coming off the lifts. Enjoy

I like servoz and you can get the train to the slopes but it really is a long way out and very quiet. I'm sure the trad big meal until midnight would be available there and very good too, but you'd probably need to add a NYE taxi to your budget (or stay out all night!) if you want to party.
