Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Dolomites/Sella Ronda-Snow Report 2008/09

 Poster: A snowHead
Poster: A snowHead
New snow across the area this morning, 30th October 2008.

There has been some discussion on another thread about Selva specifically, but as different snowHeads snowHead will be visiting various resorts in this area this winter, I thought I'd start a more general thread for snow reports from any/all of the Dolomiti Superski areas to whet people's appetite and to keep an eye on conditions in this scenic corner of the Alps.

Here are some webcams to bookmark:

Selva & Val Gardena: http://www.val-gardena.com/en/plan-de-gralba/page97.html

Arabba: http://www.arpa.veneto.it/csvdi/svm/webarpav/arabba.htm

Check out the buttons on the left of some of the pages for more webcams and click to enlarge, and enjoy!!! Cool snowHead

I wish people wouldn't put links on these sort of topics 'cos early (or late) in the season when you click on them the snow is nowhere to be seen. It's so disappointing !

Snow right across the valley at Cortina, was looking decidedly autumnal yesterday, now winter has arrived (for a while at least!):

Cortina opens up the Tondi slope early in the Faloria area this weekend due to good snowcover and cold temps, so the locals can let off some early season steam:

This weekend's snow event coming in from the NW has produced cold temps but negligible snowfall across the Dolomites, snow cannons are out in force.
It seems that a disturbance drifting up from the SW will meet the cold air on Monday and produce up to 15cm of natural snowfall across the Dolomite peaks and right down to 400m in the valleys. Then sunny, cold and dry until Thursday:

Monday's weather brought 10-20cm of fresh snow at altitude across the region, snowcover right down into valley bottoms also. Huge piles of the man-made variety are visible on many webcams too.

Looking to Friday forecasts, another moisture-laden low drifts up from W Mediterranean into N Italy, promises some good snowfall as it meets cold air. With temps at or below freezing, snow is forecast in major N Italian inland cities such as Milan & Turin. When the system hits the mountains, it should produce more white stuff. Hoping for some in the Dolomites.

ickabodblue, head over towards Corvara and San Cassiano, there's some nice blues over that way and nice mountain restaurants.

But it really is too soon to get this excited!!!

Reports now showing 20-50cm (38cm above Arabba) new snow fell at altitude across the region Friday & overnight. Powder conditions for those lucky opening day skiers!!! snowHead

Looking to Sunday & Monday forecasts are looking at some really big accumulations, between 65-105 cm are predicted, the place will be buried if this materialises!!! Shocked Short-range forecasts have been pretty accurate till now, so here's hoping!

This amount of snow is pretty unusual for this region, especially in the early season. It will provide a really good base for the season, it should now remain cold enough at altitude to preserve it.

Some snow fell on Saturday and 43cm are reported above Arabba for last 24h, this makes for accumulation of approx 90cm since Friday, with more forecast today.

No wonder the rooftops look laden even in sheltered Ortisei:

http://www.val-gardena.com/en/ortisei/page206.html

Lifts open this week in Val Gardena and the complete Sella Ronda opens at the weekend.

What a fantastic start to the season! snowHead snowHead snowHead

Val Gardena is reporting snow depths of 140cm on the mountain and 80cm in the valley this morning:

http://www.dolomitisuperski.com/gardena/en-US/open-lifts-slopes-val-gardena-732EN.html

Notice that the historical snow depths for last season never made it this deep all season long, they made do with 20/30cm (perfectly skiable on-piste) until 2nd week Jan:

http://www.skiclub.co.uk/skiclub/reports/historical/report.asp (select Selva Gardena)

We should probably expect the depths to compact down as they are skied and pisted, but this really is going to be an excellent base for the season.
