Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Thanks for your help with that one....

Now I need to know....

The hire company will give them to me for the four days but at around £60. Having a quick look on the web it seems cheaper to buy my own (and I can use them again and again).

Is there a one size that fits all? Is there a safe bet to get one that will fit the standard hire car (focus I think)?

Have looked on Halfords site and they do some that fit wheels up to 205 / 16 inch which sounds OK.

Thanks again

I got mine from a store near Warrington for about 70 quid. They are fairly size specific, though there is a bit of overlap. If they seem a little loose or overly tight then maybe drive slowly and check them every 10 minutes.

Well, the person's real but it's just a made up name, see?

rooney, chains are definitely not one size fits all. Where are you going? You'll find the best buys in French hypermarkets, alternatively the Swiss chain Migros will probably sell them.

Don't know the Italian hypermarket chains I'm afraid, but you're bound to pass a shopping centre somewhere on route.

The route from Brescia airport to madonna does not pass any hypermarkets. I think you will generally drive up past lake garda and through villages to madonna. You may be best off getting the car model you are to rent and buying them here in london. What a pain!!!!!!!

Well have gone for a Focus (apparently). Suppose they could give us something equivalent.

Halford sell ones that seem to cover most sizes up to 205 tyres....can't see a hire car having bigger than that !

the petrol stations will sell them as well - and if you are willing to wait (any pay probably a little premium) at least you can get their assurance that the chains they sell you will fit your car (i did this in italy - somewhere en route from milan to cervinia)

rooney, When we have bought chains for a hire car, the company has re-imbursed us. If you ask for them on arrival they will almost certainly not have any at the desk, and offer to pay for the set you buy at a garage en route - last year in France they cost about £65 for a Laguna. They weight about 5kg a set so not something you want in your luggage by the way

Have you checked out the link on Ski club site for "snow socks". Looks like a much easier fit...

Not too sure they would be accepted by the gendarmes though,
