Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

The Best Equipment Prices Are In The UK - Probably

I have just come back from Val D’Isere – whilst the snow maybe deep your pockets will need to be too - if you are intending to buy equipment!!!

The prices are approx 25% more expensive than the UK – I guess when the retailers purchased their kit the £ was worth 1.46 now your best tourist rate is 1.12 euros to the pound.

I guess this is the same in the states with the £ the way it is.

Wouldn't dream of buying kit in Europe. Buying gear from the States even allowing for the P' poor exchange rate and shipping, still works out cheaper than buying here or mainland Europe. The service from the US is also usually spot-on. I bought a pair of quality Salomon snowboard bindings for our eldest from the States this week, £66 inc. shipping. OK, last years model, but heho. wink

Most retailers will mark the Airway bill 'GIFT'. This usually sorts the tax. Stuff sent USPS tends to get 'pulled' moreso than couriers such as Fedex. Always ask for the package to be marked 'GIFT' or 'REPLACEMENT ITEM'. It usually works.

europe is loads dearer. I have been looking around here (Bodensee) Mountaineering clothing is upto 50% derer than uk. The weak pound is making it appear worse. For instance Mammut Base jum trousers, £100 back home, 190eu out here

That does depend rather on what gear it is you are buying.

It appears that ski boots, for example, are a fair bit more expensive in the USA than the UK.

Buy in Resort, find the right shop and the rest is history. This is an educated perspective having worked in the UK and abroad. Like playing Poker, only there are more Aces. Cool

SMALLZOOKEEPER, don't believe you've worked in the UK in the last few weeks, though. The £ is not a happy bunny, which is what all this is really about.

Definitely the case - alpine retailers and indeed bars and restaurants might have to consider giving a Brit discount if they want to keep flogging stuff - I'll certainly not be buying a £15 stale piece of bread with melted cheese or "croute" this year.

Why pay 30% premium on UK prices when we know UK retailers will be discounting fairly early this season?

 You know it makes sense.

For price alone I guess you would say Boots in the UK, Skis from European discounters, Clothing in the US - if you happen to be there. Not really worth the duty/tax to import from there any more.

fatbob, there may be a few closing down sales to help along...
