Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Unusual for them to go on sale with anything this early. They're about to open a big store on 5th floor of Harrods. Would haver thought that kind of price tag would shift there.

Wow, for that money I'd want the jacket to come with some kind of in-built gluhwein machine or something equally improbable.

Got my boots in S+N last year. Cheapest for the ones I wanted by a long way.

*edit to add... my wife bought a jacket and hat in there a couple of weeks ago. Not cheap, but they had it in stock in the colour she wanted and in her size. Because they had exactly what she wanted, she was happy to pay the price.

Slush & Rubble are way too expensive for me. It's top dollar for everything they stock. No wonder the likes of Tesco, Lidl etc have started to stock reasonably priced ski clothes. In these challenging times S&R have got to wake up and smell the coffee! Twisted Evil

I'd keep your eye on S&R for bargains - I was in their chertsey store the other day, and one of the attendants was moaning to her mate about stock levels - not understocking but being rdiculously over-stocked vis a vis the level of sales, especially in jackets / pants. As we know TOs are cutting back a bit, so that might suggest less people going on ski trips this year.

IIRC their main wintersports sale is around March time when discounts of upto 70% are not uncommon and as long as you get in there early in the sale period they've always seemed to have a good range of kit at very discounted prices. Nike ACG jacket for c. £50 as opposed to £200ish, Northface softshell 60% off etc.

They don't have the absolute rock-bottom prices, true.

But they do have reasonable prices for what they stock, they just don't stock the low-end products much.

They still have proper ski jackets under £150.

I haven't bought ski wear there, and I'm not particularly likely to, because I am happy with the Trespass/Tog24 type stuff. But many people aren't.

I was in an independent the other day, the guy said hardware sales are on a par with recent years, but clothing sales are down. Not surprising, given that most people get a new jacket as retail therapy rather than actually needing a new one - that kind of expenditure seems to be down.

I think its pretty obvious Ellis Brigham & S+R will have a surplus of kit left at the end of the season having placed orders before the disatrous last couple of months. Even if redundant people are holding on to their hols its not essential they upgrade gear and in an anticipated retail price deflationary environment sensible people are only spending on distress/essential purchases.

If teh likes of DSG are going down the toilet with their mass market must have gadgetry - where does that leave specialist hobby retailers?

DSGs been fuelled by chavs buying mega huge flat screens on finance, so they're bound to lose out in credit restricted age..

I've noticed that s+r and eb have both not been stocking the selection they usually do this year anyway

barthez1980, But still only of any use if the booots fit you "out of the box".

And you seem to be very wrong indeed about it being cheaper too. I just loked up one example of a boot that is on both the S&R and the evogear sites - The Salomon Idol 9 (womens). Including the international shiping cost for ski boots to the UK of $73, you would pay $553 for that boot (£361.70 at current exchange rates), while S&R currently have it for £243.70. That is actually the second most expensive boot listed on the S&R website.

The next most expensive boot in S&R which is also in Evogear is the Nordica olympia SM8 - £150.69 in S&R, $499 (+ carriage Shocked) in Evogear.

Decent boots usually retail around the $700 mark in the US. This year's exchange rates do however mean that buying must have purchases in the UK is a practical reality.

alex_heney, Allot of the European ski gear is expensive in the USA & Canada but have a look at the prices on Billick or conrad and you will see them cheaper.

We gor out firs S&R in Dublin this year. I love the shop and the staff are very good with decent knowledge and pleasent demenour. Sadly I think they have priced a little high thinking the Celtic Tiger is still alive and kicking. But having said that they have dropped some prices since opening.

I don't think anywhere much does.

Boots are too personal for that to be practical, TBH. Unless you have "stock feet", the boots will need some tweaking, and they will always need the liner heat moulding.

I bought mine from EB at the MK Xscape, and there was certainly no suggestion at that time that you could, although what you could of course do was take them on the slope immediately after purchase then go back for any minor tweaks necessary - anything more than minor tweaks and they can't always do them there and then.

Yes, I'm sure you can. I was just responding to the actual site he had suggested.

But I don't think S&R prices are generally much out of line for the items they sell, it is just that most of the things they sell tend to be from fairly high priced ranges.
