 Poster: A snowHead

Hi, I'm an experienced skier (OK, good intermediate...), the friend I used to go with has got married, kid etc etc......
So, I'm pondering going with the Mrs (maybe over xmas - best place for 'guaranteed' snow - must be low end of price range ?  ), who doesn't ski, but would love to do a weeks beginners lessons.
Not wanting to ski on my own, what are my options? Could get lessons and hope to hook up with some of the class for the rest of the time I guess.
Any other ideas?

martinm, the trip I have going to LDA 7th March could be of interest to you? No, it's not at Christmas, but it is definitely snow-sure and low price range. You certainly would be hard pushed to beat the instruction available too - groups of 4 are most unusual and the instructor (Easiski) has a very good reputation. There are still a couple of places for absolute beginners, but there are also some more experienced folks going so there'd be possible ski-companions for you too. The suggestions listed above (Ski with the SCGB, go to a Snowheads Bash, and/or join Butterfly in Les Deux Alps) are all sound.
Another option, one that I've used several times in the past, is to go on a chalet based holiday. You'll usually find people to ski with amongst the other people in the chalet. I find it easier to mix with strangers in a chalet atmosphere than in a hotel. One word of warning, try to avoid chalets where all the other people are in a large group.

martinm, I can thoroughly recommend a snowHeads Bash, having been on my 1st (on my own, not knowing anyone else) in April in Val Thorens. It was a great experience, everyone is really friendly, and there's no shortage of people to ski/socialise with

I travel alone and quite happily ski by myself, but I have found that most TOs organise group guiding, so there are always people to ski with. Or you just get chatting to people in your chalet/hotel...

I think there's still room in the catered apartment we're going to over Xmas - see my post in the Trips forum called "Anyone for Les Deux Alpes Over Christmas" - the following link should get you there: http://snowheads.com/ski-forum/viewtopic.php?t=43799.
Les Deux Alpes is guaranteed to have snow as it has a glacier. The lift system in LDA allows non-skiers to get right up to the top of the glacier & to reach the mountain restaurants so if you wanted to meet your wife up the mountain without her having to ski back down then she could. You'd be very welcome to do some skiing with Pete & me when your wife is in lessons & I think there should be other snowheads in LDA over Xmas. Chalets are certainly better than hotels if you are on your own. People get lumped together more and mix more. Usually relatively better value too.

If you're going for Xmas you need to go to a high resort for the last 20 years I've been going to Val D'Isere or the high resorts in the 3 Valleys. I prefer Val because it is a nice town where everything is on one level not little hamlets dotted over the mountain.
I prefer large chalets or chalet hotels with lots of other guests because it's easy to socialise. If you get ski hosting you will also have others to ski with. If you go to somewhere where there is a SCGB rep you can ski with them for a day free as a taster and then decide if you want to join the SCGB.
So far the Xmas prices haven't dropped significantly if you're looking for a late availabilty deal. However if there are only 2 of you you should be able to find a deal.
