Is it generally available from French supermarkets (in the Tarentaise) ? Any locals out there know ?
Alternatively, is there a local 'equivalent', i.e something available in miniature form that tastes good and engenders that 'happy holiday' feeling, which we have become accustomed to in Austria !

masmith, Yes. Also genepi and Chartreuse, both equally nasty.

genepi is horrible. I had a very good meal in France a couple of weeks ago, with wild boar as the main course and creme brulee - my favourite - dessert. However the creme brulee turned out to be with genepi - which wasn't an improvement. We once bought a bottle, in our initial enthusiasm for all things Savoyard and it was the only sort of booze which lasted so long undrunk in the cupboard that eventually I poured it down the sink.

Is Jagermeister the one that tastes like Benelyn? It gets a lot of press here - what would I typically expect from a session? Taste, effects, aftermath etc........

No. Jaegermeister is the one that tastes of herbs and spices. A girl who once fancied me brought me a bottle once. Mmm, yummy stuff (in a you-drink-it-because-its-good-for-you sort of way!).

You know it makes sense.

I can't believe nobody likes Genepi and Chartreuse? I know I am a dyed in the wool Alcie, but seriously folks, they're gorgeous when sipped after a meal.
Viperin on the other hand I can do without, tastes like nail varnish remover and whilst I am not afraid of snakes it doesn't mean I want to drink bits of them (closest I can see to a pukey smiley)
