Hi,
Just been looking at the snow levels/forecasts for the resorts around Banff.
Aren't the snow levels a bit low and temperatures a bit high for this time of year? I thought the resorts were supposed to open next week!
I'm not going till Feb so I'm not too worried yet but is this a normal start?

I think it is only Sunshine that normally opens November 1st. The other two are a bit later, although Lake Louise normally has the first non-glacier FIS world cup events.

Well, the person's real but it's just a made up name, see?

Storms set to roll through starting Sat with temps for snow. Skied over thanksgiving, it can still be quite thin.

nakiska is holding the first world cup event in canada this year, and afaik, it's lower than any of the others. not until 21st nov though. plenty time for snow to arrive. then it's the 29th at LL.

I thought that last year when I was looking. It looks green for a while and then gets some big dumps. There is plenty of snow at sunshine if you check the webcams

All it takes is a big storm. One dump could change it over night.
Also, just because it is not forecast for snow doesn't mean it won't.
I think Norquay are usually first open in the Bow Valley, generally a token weekend before anyone else on man made snow. Sunshine usually opens a week in.

I don't think it is possible to get another season as bad as the last so wouldn't worry.

It is still very warm here in Calgary, 20 degrees today and its warm at night. It is apparently unseasonally warm at the moment.
Seems to be dipping colder from next week in the mountains

Lechbob, Celcius.
shoogly, apparently the Pacific is a bit cold again this year which isn't a good thing for the Rockies-cold and dry.

And love to help out and answer questions and of course, read each other's snow reports.

arv, How bad was last season?
I didn't really follow conditions in this area last year as I wasn't going!
Are long term forecasts for another "bad" season or can we expect something better?

I though it was ok in early march. It had less powder/fresh snow than the previous two years, but there were still metres of the stuff. The surface was just a bit more compact and the wife wasn't so keen on it.

You know it makes sense.

smudger, wasn't a great deal of fresh in large amounts, more than enough snow to ski on though, wouldn't worry.
Long term forecasts are educated guess' at best.
