Ok so weve done the normal fly/ski drive/ski holidays, weve just purchased our first motorhome and will be staying in Bourg St Maurice for the week after xmas! Cant wait as we love the area and are looking forward to living out of the motorhome! Woot!

surfstar, sounds great, but I hope you have top class insulation; the vans sold with normal UK spec insulation are not up to living in a ski resort in the winter.  There are some motorhome specialists on snowheads from time to time - one of them will be along in a while and able to answer any queries.

Its an old motorhome that came from Germany. Its been put together well but i will be making checks to see if I will survive.

Some of the German ones are much better insulated than British ones. You can practice this coming week, by the look of the weather forecast.

surfstar, But it probably won't be minus 20 in the middle of the night..... wot sort of heating you got? My daughter and son in law just bought an old VW and their heater works off an LPG tank, which is useful. But theirs is definitely not insulated to the level needed to stay in the Alps. A cold night in Cornwall (they're surfers) would be OK though.

I have the same, it works off LPG and is really neat because it has blown air vents all around the motorhome. We plan to also get a small 12v heater to have running at night if it gets really bad but im feeling more confident that it will be okay. I cant wait! lets hope for snow

boot warmer/dryer would be a good idea.
How are you going to handle clothes drying and general snow/wet stuff? In a confined space this may be an issue

Staying at http://www.leversoyen.com/gb1.html we have a large 6 berth motorhome with only 2 adults and 1 child going so there should be enough room for drying stuff but if not there is a drying room onsite

I used to have a caravan, but got rid of it when the kids got to "their at that age". Those prices are so cheap compared to what you would pay in the UK even on a caravan club site.
Just in case you don't know your LPG tanks have to be less than half empty if you are travelling by the Tunnel, get you motorhome equipped with a carver type electric heater which works with your blown air heating and leave it on all day.
This is what I want to do in a few years, when maybe I can think of semi-retirement. Just hope the body is still up to it and the city bankers haven't buggered it up for me
Their is a trailer park in resort at ADH which I plan on spending a few weeks at. Whatever enjoy.

We bought the motor home for summer holidays and long weekends but when i looked into going skiing in it the saving is huge! Plus we can take as much equipment/pets/mother in law as possible.

If there are any experts around who have done this sort of thing further advice on heating, chains etc would be welcome as I am considering this too.

twoodwar, no expert, but I've had a camper in the past, and have friends and relations with them now. None of them - absolutely none - have had anything like the level of insulation which would be needed for an Alpine campsite with temperatures (hopefully) well below freezing every night. Ours wasn't even comfortable on an ordinary British winter night - though we did quite often sleep in it ourselves, or put visiting kids in it, it was a matter of dashing out at bed time with a high quality sleeping bag. Sitting in the thing from 4 - 5 pm is quite another matter. You should find plenty of advice on insulation standards etc. on the camper forums. I love campers, but you wouldn't catch me in a UK spec vehicle in the snow.

Remember it won't get above freezing even DURING the day, let alone the nights. You need to pray for a good dusting of snow which will help with insulation - but make travel difficult.
If you are 2 adults and a child, and when you can hire a studio for not very much money, and you think of the extra petrol, travel time and ferry costs compared to a car... plus LPG for heating...

Agreed you could save time and fuel but ive done the whole drive ski thing and its time for a proper adventure. The campsite costs 20 euro a night and there is no way a studio would cost anything near that.

It's often much warmer than that in Bourg (although that campsite is closer to the shady side of the valley than the sunny side). Although I have no experience of using a motorhome I'd guess that the site that surfstar is staying at offers a good compromise: low enough (about 850m) to avoid the worst of the weather, but with a fast funicular (7 minutes to Arc 1600) to get up the mountain.

Hi Rob thanks for your feedback. Last year was great at 1800 during xmas new year as you will probaly recall there was a big dump just before xmas that made the ski to bourg possible. Im hoping for the same this year but am optimistic. From your experience what is the skiing like ay 1600 at that time as im a boarder and dont fancy to much ice.

however we are now thinking to for http://www.camping-lanchettes.com/ as its higher and the chance of snow is greater but think we may be a bit cut off. The beauty of the bourg campsite is that its 2 mins from the supermarkets

surfstar, there are two or three ways down to 1600, a wide but steepish red and a couple of gentle blues. If the red gets a bit scraped and icy you can opt to take one of the blues which should be free of ice.
I'd definitely stick with the campsite in Bourg. You have the convenience of the supermarkets just across the road (also a cafe there, launderette, sports shop with ski/board hire and a DIY supermarket if you feel the urge to erect some shelves), the funicular is very close and if you fancy a day in La Rosiere, St Foy or Tignes/Val d'Isere it is much easier to get to those places from Bourg than it is from Peisey. The nearest chairlift to get into La Rosiere/La Thuile skiing is just 15 minutes from your campsite.

Are you sure - Lanchettes is very pretty and you do get that 'skiing atmos' feel there.
There is also a free shuttle bus to Piercy (10 mins) and onto the bucket lift and into the ski system.
Of course there isn't a couple of supermarkets across the road however!!!

I dont know now! infact im going to stick with bourg as it is our first snow trip in the home and i want to make sure that if anything goes wrong im in easy reach of a town (and supermarket!)

Hope you have a good trip out, the campsite is very good and there are plenty of English speakers on the site to help you out if you have any problems. Much better to be in Bourg than higher up in the mountains with your camper if it is anything like my old van. To cold higher up. Lot's of cheaper bars, shops etc in town. Hope to meet up for a beer whilst you are around.
