Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

I agree - to impertune and influence minors whilst skiing is unnecessary

Anyway, snowHeads is much more fun if you do.

If it's likely to put an end to all the 'what/who is an intermediate/expert/incompetent' threads I'm all for it. Laughing

They've abolished SATs for 14-yr olds - so why make Pistes take tests

Well, I know this is stating the obvious, but some guidance, however flawed, is better than none to keep people not yet equipped to cope with them off difficult runs (and to attract those who want them to them).

Of course anyone who has skied will have noticed that the same run in different conditions can vary a great deal in difficulty.

The criteria for different gradings can very well be disputed (and have been in various previous threads. Not that it isn't worth regularly discussing again).

Couldn't they replace them with the SKGB badge colours, they are so much nicer?

Ah, I can imagine a Silver run, with Purple patches. Oh no, that's SCGB gradings, not badges (there are only bronze, silver and Gold) - or did you mean gradings - much more nuanced.

 snowHeads are a friendly bunch.

It would be good to think there might be some way of giving an indication of difficulty which nonetheless stopped all the daft "we did all the black in the 3 Valleys" rubbish.

And love to help out and answer questions and of course, read each other's snow reports.

Arbitrary colours does that as much as anything could. If you called them "difficult" or "advanced" it would be worse.

So if you're just off somewhere snowy come back and post a snow report of your own and we'll all love you very much

They should have numbers ranking the runs in steepness from greatest to least. Then also give it a grade and say if it's groomed or ungroomed. Lots of work but it would be efficient.

 You know it makes sense.

Personally I feel that there should be a traffic light system at the top of each run which has a built in ability sensor and can therefore detect whether you're capable of doing it.. or not. Of course if you ignored it, then a klaxon could sound followed by a loud speaker warning "Schuss in Boots.. get the hell off this run and get back to the nursery slopes where you belong" or similar.... rolling eyes

skiking4, what would you do with a really gentle run which has one, short steep bit. (That's a problem at present too)

Using colours, numbers or cake does not matter when the resorts all want a number of easy, mid and hard runs to attract a wider customer base as possible. Until (if ever, or even wanted) an international standard is followed, you just have to gauge the meaning of the slope guide by the nature of the the terrain over all for that resort/mountain.
