Can anyone tell me if the drive on the E45 from Italy up to Innsbruck is straightforward in winter (Xmas/New Year)?
Just wondering if it's liable to be closed or anything really and if there are any other tips you may have...

Assuming that is the Brenner pass, tey try and keep it open all the time.
I know that when I was in Austria in 2007, when hardly anything was flying out of Innsbruck due to a snowstorm, they were taking people to Verona by bus, so it was still open then even with very heavy snow falling.

roga, if that's the Brenner pass, it's a big feck off motorway on stilts and I don't think it goes particularly high by alpine pass standards, not likely to be any trouble.

Yeah, I think it is the Brenner Pass.
Are snow tires/chains compulsory in either or both countries?
I'll be hiring a car in Italy and don't want to get caught out by any Austrian laws on the way!

roga, In "wintry" weather it is compulsory to have either snow chains or winter tyres in Austria.
And if you try with just snow chains, you won't be allowed to drive using them except in full snow - i.e. you will not legally be allowed to drive at all in slushy conditions.
And sin ce everything else around will have winter tyres, it wouldn't be wise to drive without them anyhow - everybody else would be able to stop much more quickly than you would.

roga, it's a well-used motorway, the main link from Germany/Austria to Italy, the Brenner pass on the border is only around 1300m so is kept open throughout winter.
Bear in mind it's a toll motorway all the way on the Italian side (about 13 euro for cars from Affi near Verona), there's a 8 euro toll for the Austrian side of the Brenner and if you plan on using the Austrian motorway network beyond Innsbruck you need the windscreen vignette sticker (info here).
The law in Austria is very hot on the use of winter tyres if there are wintry conditions, which for all practical purposes means if you are planning to drive in Austria in winter you should specify them. May be a problem if hiring in low-altitude locations in Italy as winter tyres aren't often supplied/necessary there.
