charlieduff,
Welcome to Snowheads. Going to Selva for the first time in January myself. Got a reasonably cheap deal so expect prices shouldn't be too bad.

charlieduff, I wouldn't necessarily put the Dolomites into the "cheap and cheerful" category, more like "well-run and good value", of course there's the full gamut of places to stay from swish hotels to cheaper apartments and B&Bs.
The slopes would favour carving more than freeride as the off-piste can be iffy, there's a lot of snowmaking, so artificial snow on piste, often misses out on natural snowfall in this corner of the Alps. If you need powder, it's not guaranteed.
Some snowboarding buddies of mine often go on weekend breaks to Kaprun in Austria, good snow pretty much guaranteed on the Kitzsteinhorn glacier, even in early season. It also has a couple of terrain parks too. Might be worth a look.

so luigi could you recommend the best place to go in the dolomites in your own opinion for boarding/apres ski/good value ? it's so confusing this dolomites place must be massive like it's own little E.U. thing going on

charlieduff, Sella Ronda is the only place I have seen a boarder with poles! There are a lot of flats. Not trying to put you off, but a lot of it is pretty gentle cruising. Probably why I like it!

charlieduff, I would recommend Selva if you want a bit of apres, you've got the German/Austrian style beer, cheesy europop and oompah at the Bierkellers as you leave the slopes and the Dolce & Gabbana Italian set into the small hours at Dali nightclub. Irish pub too. Go-go dancers at Piz Seteur hut some afternoons, if that's your thing.
Slopes best suit those who like cruising the pistes around the breathtaking scenery stopping at the plentiful huts, there is a boarder-cross at Selva but I don't remember a terrain park. As ChrisBish says, there are some annoying flats about, boarders beware.
There are places for all sorts of budgets, places near the main lifts are pricier, you can do an accommodation search at www.suedtirol.info, Selva is found in Val Gardena. Cheaper B&B is about 30 euro pppnt. depending on season and location. It used to be a bargain when they had the Lira, since the Euro arrived prices have risen, but still good value for money.
