Has anyone been to Val Cenis over Xmas/New Year. Seems like a good quietish resort but any idea of snow at that time?
It's a toss up between Half Term and New Year and New Year has won!!
Any advise please.
Jo

In my experience Val Cenis is never that busy. I admit I have never been there at that time though.
However I gather the area has been developed a bit since I was last there - but largely by additions to Termignon, rather than Val Cenis (see http://pistehors.com/news/ski/comments/0637-val-cenis-termignon-link/). But 5 years ago we were literally almost the only people skiing Termignon all day with fresh powder about - so it doesn't take much to make it busier.
That's Termignon 4 years ago in the distance - as approached from off-piste from yet another village (I think there are 8 ). By the way, you can click a second time on these photos to enlarge more and you will then see two of only four ski tracks in this valley - far down (more than a week after the last fall). We are heading for a big bowl to the right of the rocks.

I have been to Val Cenis the last two Winters (both time early January).
Really nice village (Lanslevillard) and resort though on the smaller side.
The up side to this is that you get to know it well (and there is more than enough skiing for a week) and its really quiet (though once there was a holiday in Italy and loads of weekenders came over but even so it was relatively quiet).
2 years ago the snow was pretty poor to be honest though! This Jan didn't have any complaints however and had a great weeks skiing with plenty of fresh powder and some great off piste.
Im new to the site BTW so hi guys!

Hi Tom,
Welcome to snowheads; where did you stay on your visits;' went there myself last January ( last week of month) & was down the other end ( Lanslebourg) with snowcoach. Thinking about going back but would prefer to stay in Lanslevillard this time so prehaps you can give some pointers . Have to take the family this time thats why I was enquiring as to how busy it gets in holiday times as I have 2 boys in school.
Snowball; thanks for the info you have posted......very useful. Do you think the planned link to Termignon wil be in this winter?
Cheers
Mitch

Well the chair-lift link was sceduled for completion this year but I don't know if it is on time. I have skied back off-piste in the past. Termignon is a very small area but has some nice tree skiing.

Hi Mitch
I tagged along with my dad and his friends and went with MGS (http://www.mgsski.com) stayed in a very nice apartment just round the corner from the church in Lanslevillard.
Just a short walk to the bottom of the slopes (then a short Shuss) down to the Tele-Cabin.

Really gratefull for all the info - school holidays got in the way of me wasting any of my time dreaming about ski holidays!!
Advice taken and skiing now booked - we'll be in Val Cenis (Lanslevillard) just after Christmas and really looking forward to it. Taking some new skiers so that should be fun.
Please don't be narked - I just didn't have time to respond until now.

For anyone interested;
If the piste map on their web site is correct, the new chair to 'Termignon ' is ( or will be ) ready. Jo, are you there new year then?
Hope there's a decent amont of snow down by then

jo reuben,
Should be okay; historical snow record seems pretty good for 4th week in December. They have a decent snow cannon coverage, so unless temps are warmer than should be, you'll be okay. You should have a god time, unless your after lots of nightlife, & the prices are very reasonable ( dare I say cheap!) for France.
