Morning all,
Has anyone skied in Obertraun? Dachstein area? Especially interested in ideas as to level of skier that it suits - beginner, intermediate, families and what, if any, nightlife. Any opinions, positive or negative very welcome. Thanks

Obviously A snowHead isn't a real person

Schladming is part of the Dachstein area and I thought it was an excellent area for intermediates. I have been there twice and would go definitely go again.

Well, the person's real but it's just a made up name, see?

We went to Obertraun 2 years ago. Nice, quiet little village with a couple of good places to eat...the Kegelbahn (fantastic pizza) and a farmers restaurant (good local food). There are also a couple of bars and a nightclub...we didn't visit them, so I can't comment.
Ski areas are reached by a reliable skibus up to the Krippenstein lift station where a 2-stage gondola goes up to the top. There is a steep drop down to the ski area, which would terrify a beginner, but the lower slopes are okay. Alternatively, get over to Russbach. Some nice blues and reds (and blacks too I think). It is possible to get the skibus there from Obertraun, but we failed miserably by getting off the bus at the wrong stop....thankfully our fantastic host (a Brit who has since moved back here) came to our rescue.
The best thing about this area is the lack of British tourists...mainly locals seem to ski there, and the slopes were clear most of the week.

We stayed in the Seerose Apartments on the edge of the lake. Its been taken over by another English family now, but the guys who ran it when we stayed there had renovated it, and the apartments were lovely. Take a look at the website: http://www.seerose-obertraun.com/about_us.htm

I was there in March for a weekend. Didn't ski the Krippenstein area, just at Dachstein West. Good skiing for all levels - our group ranged from a second timer to an ex-seasonnaire. Don't believe the piste map which marks almost everything as Red though!
Stayed at the Obertraunerhof (http://www.obertraunerhof.com/) who arranged taxis to/from the slopes each day so didn't have to worry about buses!

If you do want to try the best Freeride skiing in Europe at Obertraun, be sure to check out the fantastic Bed & Breakfast called Haus Hepi www.haushepi.com
Also it makes a good base to explore Dachstein West and Loser from.

Hi, I skied Obertraun last year. I am not a freerider (yet) but found the 11km red run amazing!! It is not often I get a kick from red runs. Loved the look of the freeride, so have booked to go back and take freeride lessons and a guide.
For the rest of my family (wife a good skier, but 2 young boys in ski school), Dachstein West was just prefect and only 15 mins away. I found it great to ski the Krippenstein a couple of days, a couple on Dachetein West, and a day at Loser and Tauplitzalm.
Loved it so much, we have booked for 2 weeks next Feb. We are staying at Landhaus Osborne again as we just loved it. Take a look at their website www.landhaus-osborne.at
Have fun....let's pray for snow.....Sven
