Hello,
I am a journalist and I am thinking of an idea for a future feature for our magazine. I was wondering, are there any more BANSKO-esque resorts springing up anywhere that are yet to benefit from a comprehensive infrastructure, where it may be viable to invest in property/resort itself?
Any info appreciated!
Thanks

So this credit crunch thing isn't quite dead yet!
If one wants to sell skiing resorts with little or no snow, amid global warming and disappearing of galciers etc,, the banker is the one to talk to. I am sure they can do "subprime" skiing resorts too.

skiben, China, Russia, Korea are all building new resorts but I wouldn't fancy a boundary dispute. Bansko is turning out not to be a viable investment (Google it and you'll see). I have a pal who is already £120k out of pocket (and no property) thanks to the dodgy builders, planners, architects, lawyers etc. It's the wild west in such places. No, the only viable investments surely must be in the popular snowsure European and North American resorts where you can predict rental income and be fairly confident of the ability to resell if you need to.

skiben, Newfoundland. . . the Canadian govt a pumping money into the development of the Cornerbrook area. Over towards Stephensville theres a small private ski hill (at the moment) and the developer offered us land at around £10,000 an acre. Back over near the established hill theres the very expensive Humber Valley Resort or various smaller developments although lakeside plots are getting rarer now. Marble Mountain itself is being extended with the far side of the mountain being developed into piste/being brought into within bounds. Heliskiing operations in the unihabited interior of the island are growing, also back country and cat skiing over at Blomidon.
I guess its always going to depend upon how much of a long game you want to play but the Canadian govts ideal is that Newfie be the next BC (for outdoor activities year round not just skiing, the mountains arent big enough to compete skiing wise imo), and only a 5 hr flight away from London.

I hope you're not going to write yet another one of these "property investment porn" articles, talking Bansko stylee uninformed bollox about potential mahoosive financial gains. Yawn.

snobunni, how big are the hills? In terms of vertical drop reliably covered in snow. Sounds an interesting place.

Ask all the Bansko investees how happy they are with their holiday paradise , their hordes of repeat visitors and the fantastic infrastructure that's provided for them along with how easy they've found it to resell their appartments.
Ask why I keep getting increasingly desperate emails trying to flog me property in Valfrejus?
Then I suggest you do some proper research rather than lazily relying on others. I've heard Intrawest are using their experience in Whistler to build a cable car from Bruson to Argentiere. parlor can confrim.

Isn't Sotchi in Russia? In spite of the temptation, aren't some of the "horror" stories about buying in Eastern Europe evidence enough of the pitfalls? J2ski has some info. Site for the 2014 winter olympics, so no doubt plenty of room for unscrupulous "developers".

Hakuba in Japan. 12m average of snowfall every winter. 6 month ski season, 200runs over 1km vertical, 10 resorts in one valley, honest locals, transparent legal system for land and vastly undervalued dirt cheap land/properties (Japan has been in a deflationary cycle for almost 20 years). Also a mini boom on its way and next to the most populous nation on Earth with the largest growing skiing numbers. Pretty much a sure thing if you can get your head around it!
The ten resorts are in a line but haven't been joined up yet so a small amount of investment in joining lifts (the locals are destitute) would make it one of the largest ski resorts in the world.

Have a look at a few of the Slovakian resorts. The local economy is growing well so it's not just propped up by buy to let vultures from Blighty - although most of them have probably caught a serious cold now anyway,
