Hi folks,
I am able to tag along on my friends uni ski trip to Kitsbuhel January 08.
They are leaving from Scotland by bus and I just do not fancy it!! They take of an allowance from the cost if you get there on your own steam, days of uni buses to resort are over for me being 10 years older than most of them!!
Been to the French alps loads of times but never the Austrian resorts so totally clueless what would be the best way to get there.
Would preffer to leave from a Scottish Airport if poss.
Any expert Kitsbuhel goers out there?

Easyjet do Edinburgh->Munich but there are some holes and disappearing flights (show up one week, gone the next) in their winter schedule, so beware!

Last year the only flights that went direct from a scottish ariport were Edinburgh to Munich with Easyjet. Its then quite a long transfer to Kitzbuhel (at least 3 hours on a saturday). You can either take the train, which you will have to change a few times (check at www.bahn.de) or there is also a bus which goes direct. I can't remember the name of the company for the bus, but I think its on Munich airport's website.
You can sometimes get charter flights from Edinburgh/Glasgow to Innsbruck but they are significantly more expensive (or at least they were last year). The transfer is, however, much quicker. I know First Choice had some charter flights for sale, but don't know about other companies.
If you're willing to go via London, or some other English airports then I'm pretty sure there are tonnes of options to Innsbruck.

We drove to Kitzbuhel and back last month. The driving/tunnel time (including breaks) from London was about 16 hours there, because of hideous jams on the German 'motorway' system and about 14 back, because of an absence of hideous jams in Germany (we split the driving over two days in each direction). That was keeping the toe reasonably well down whenever possible, at speeds which might not be achieved by a well loaded minibus or coach. You obviously have to add on a fair few hours if you'll start in Scotland. What route will they take? I'd have thought an overnight ferry (Hull - Rotterdam or Zeebrugge) with a nice early arrrival and then a long day's drive should do it. Bus will be the cheapest option.
You can fly to Munich and train (3-4 hours from Airport to resort), transfer or car (2 ish hours, more when it's busy, obviously, can be horribly busy on a Saturday) to Kitzbuhel. You could fly to Innsbruck, which is closer than Munich, I think, or Salzburg and go by train or car or transfer, and there are presumably other airports from which you could transfer to Kitzbuhel, but they'll be further. Munich probably has the best balance between cost and transfer time and has been my invariable route to ski in Kitzbuhel. There is a train (the Bergland Express) which leaves from Brussels on a Friday evening at about 19.30 and arrives in Kitzbuhel on Saturday morning at about 08.00, and vv Saturday evening/Sunday morning. You can get it by taking a Eurostar from StPancras early Friday afternoon. That may be useless for you if you are in Scotland. I've used the same train to travel to StAnton (which involves changing at Innsbruck).

sparkzter, my pals from up your way generally drive to Manchester and use Lufthansa direct to Munich. We then meet up and taxi it to Kitz. On your own that would be an expensive option. Train is a longish journey but it'll go like clockwork and the one down to Austria has a nice bar on board.
Otherwise, look intio the seat-only option on a charter from Glasgow. Haven't checked but there must be some to Salzburg or Innsbruck. Trains from there are a cinch or you might blag your way onto a transfer bus.

Try not to fly into Salzburg - I'm pretty sure the train journey Salzburg to Kitzbuhel is 3 hours  , Innsbruck is the closest if you can get a flight to there.

I seem to recollect it took us less than 2 hours driving from Munich when we did a boys weekend trip in early february.. it was late (10pm ish outward) and we had hire cars so not particulalry hanging around. It is one for the sat nav however as the route is not especially straight forward IIRC

Thanks for all your replies, some good stuff to look at in that lot. Would be a whole lot easier if i lived in London!!
But then Glen Coe wouldn't be an hours drive away!!

The Bergland Express is fine if you are constrained to go at half term, as we are, as there are no cost penalties of the type applied by airlines (although flights to MUC are not too bad in that respect), so the cost is only a bit more than flying and you get 8 full days on the slopes (in Kitzbuhel) without staying any more nights in resort. If cheapo cheapo flights are available the Bergland Express can't compete on price (which is absurd, but there it is).

We did a boys weekend to Kitzbuhel last Jan from Stansted-salzburg with Ryan air, and i`m sure the car transfer was only 90 mins or so.

Salzburg to Kitzbuhel is about an hour and a half by road. But by train I'm pretty sure is about 3 hours - the road takes a different route to the train track

Drove to Kaprun last summer and route took us via Kitzbuhel. Agree with others in that the autobahns, whilst amazing in places do get extremely jammed up. Don't know whether you could drive down France then cut across. My experience is that the French roads are much quieter than the German ones. Best bet would be to get a flight to Salzburg, as I'm sure it's equidistant from Innsbruck. Think there are more flights to Salzburg from Scotland than Innsbruck. Have flown with Ryanair via Stanstead to Salzburg, but you might be better getting a flight from north of England somewhere and flying direct.
Done to coach journey to Austria from Glasgow as a 16 year old with my mates one summer - pretty hellish journey.
