bitoffluff, You could do a lot worse than to sign up for some of the snowheads bashes, have a look under snowEvents. There are at least 3 events organised by this group of skiers each year and from what I saw of the one I went on very few couples actually go. Lots of folks go and leave the other halves at home and lots of singles go too. They are great fun and you always have someone to go an ski with.

You could also try a ski course of some kind or other - lots of singles do them.

bitoffluff, beanie1 is right. They are ideal, and the focus is very much on skiing. A number of outfits do them and if what you want to do is improve your skiing, and have a holiday with other keen people, they'd be ideal for you. There are a number discussed on Snowhead. On a "singles" holiday the focus might be elsewhere and you're right; it could be cringeworthy. The Ski Club of Great Britain holidays could be a good bet too. I did a course, as a single, with Sally Chapman's outfit, the Ski Company. I shared a room with another female, to save dosh, but could have had a room to myself if I'd wanted to pay for it.

This company no longer exists, but the two ski schools that it spawned (Snoworks and Inspired to Ski) operate in similar ways and offer same-sex room sharing to avoid room supplements. I've done several trips with these companies as a single skier and without fail have had wonderful trips. Great instruction and enjoyable apres ski.

bitoffluff,
As has been mentioned above the Snowhead Bashes are a good way to meet people to ski and socialise with.
For most of my ski holidays I've gone on my own and I've found chalet holidays are a good way for single travellers to find people to ski with. Some companies will offer you a same/sex share so you can avoid single supplements.
Another way of meeting people to ski with in resorts is to take advantage of the Ski Club of GB guiding service (it's not everyone's cup of tea but I've found it useful).
You could also just ask where and when other snowheads are skiing over the winter.

The Neilson (tour op) website aslso has a "singles" section on their forum I believe where you can arrange to share rooms to save single supplements

bitoffluff, I'm sure there is romance for people who want it, but conversely if you're not looking for that then it's not an issue either.

bitoffluff, I've been on holidays as a "single" with Snoworks, the SCGB and Snowheads. All have been excellent, but with slightly different flavours. SCGB groups are pretty skiing focussed, and depending on the week you're on may be with instructors or SCGB leaders, keen skiers who know their way around but who are not instructors, and they work fairly hard to ensure that groups are of compatible standards (sometimes with the smaller holidays that doesn't quite work though, resulting in a bit of a headache for the leader to resolve). Tend to be fairly middle/professional class, but you can still have a good time in the evening if you so wish. Snoworks is definitely for personal development - skiing all or half day in groups with instructors (or, on the Backcountry course, half of the time with guides). There are typically 6 or 8 groups in a week, which allows quite a bit of flexibility to move people about to ensure the most compatible groupings. By the end of the day, and after a good evening meal, most people only have little more energy than is required to retire to the bar. Snowheads bashes are a bit more free-form, with groups forming and reforming pretty much ad hoc and the sociable side is at least as important as the skiing (at least with some of the regulars ).

bitoffluff, If you are interested in France, you'd do well to look into UCPA: http://holidays.ucpa.com/france_winter.aspx Tons of single participants and the focus is skiing and not romance. I've done a few of these and never had trouble meeting people and making friends for the week. Prices can't be beat either and include lodging, all meals, equipment rentals, and typically full-time instruction although I think there are options to forgo the instruction if you so desire. Their larger centers offer instruction in English and tend to attract a lively Scandinavian crowd as well. I've only stayed in their more basic (2 *) lodgings - think dormitories, bunk beds, and shared baths. Some of their properties though are a bit less "rustic" from what I understand. Overall though, a great option for travelling solo.

another option is www.coldfusionchalets.co.uk - they do a chalet in chamonix or morzine that's aimed at independent skiers, without all the "single" connotations. I did a month there last winter and may well do the same in 09, only have good things to say about it.

Why dont you try Redpoint Holidays? They are offering Solo Weeks, staying in single ensuite rooms without a supplement and include guiding too in small groups. They are based in Zillertal, Austria with over 600km of pistes to choose from.
They are operating these most of the Winter Season 2008/2009 - great if you cant get anyone to go skiing with you and have some company too. Prices are very reasonable and include meals.
I have copied and pasted this contact for you : http://www.redpoint.co.uk/solo-single-ski-holidays.shtml - Enjoy

Were you hurt by love ?
I have met lots of fun people people on solo ski holidays - just pick a decent size chalet - skiers like to ski in bunches. I never find romance despite the romatic locations.

Hello alll,
I am a solo guy on my own and want to go away over christmas (and new year if i can afford it). Anyone got any ideas. I am 38 and dont want to share a room. but would love some company.

vocalbill, try www.speedbreaks.co.uk they have lots of Christmas and New Year ski trips to choose from and plus they always have London flights as well. It would fit the bill for you to have some company and you don't have to share a room.
Also-not tried them but Cold Fusion chalets in Chamonix have single rooms at a supplement.
Welcome to Snowheads.
