Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Resorts Near Vienna

My son has an opportunity of working in Vienna for a year. If we go and visit him, are there any good ski resorts within an hour or 2 drive?

There is not much in the way of big ski areas near Vienna. A number of small areas and probably less reliable for cover. One that is popular is Semmering to the south (about 1.5 hrs by train or about 1 hour car drive from Vienna),at the Semmering you can find 2 ski resorts; Hirschenkogel and Stuhleck. Stuhleck is the better one, this resort offers more slope, vertical and lifts as the nearby Hirschenkogel. But the night skiing at Hirschenkogel is really a great thing. For a decent sized resort you have to head south-west to the Schladming area (about 4-5 hours by train or 3 hours by car). Have a look here http://www.bergfex.at/austria/ select the region Niederösterreich for the area around Vienna.Closest skiresort to Vienna are Hirschenkogel, Stuhleck, Unterberg, Puchberg/Losenheim and the Wechsel mountains with St Corona and Mönichkirchen/Mariansee.

Agree with angel_ski, and I would add Hochkar and Lackenhof-Ötscher to your list. All the resorts are small, but may be enough for a day trip.
One of my favs is Hochar, one of the best snow records in the whole Austria, you can ski there in May. Stuhleck is another good choice for a day.
I have skied the small resorts around Mariazell, charming villages and good skiing.
There are a lot of good resorts to choose from if you want a one day trip.

SCollier1, it all sounds pretty nice, if you ask me. Tell your son to firm it up immediately! snowHead
