Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Vail official proposes tax on ski-lift tickets

VAIL, Colorado — Eagle County commissioners want to tax lift tickets to pay for roads, forest work or housing.

Commissioner Peter Runyon has asked Colorado Counties Inc. to lobby for a provision that would allow counties to levy a “use tax” on ski-lift tickets.

Reached Thursday, Runyon said he envisions a statewide — not countywide — tax on lift tickets. Lift tickets are exempt from sales taxes, but they should be subject to some taxation, Runyon said.

“Exempting the ski industry from sales tax was put forward in the ’60s when the ski industry was very small and the state Legislature wanted to encourage and promote it,” Runyon said. “I would argue that the ski industry is very much on its feet and has probably grown a few extra feet.”

Voters would have to approve a new tax.

I haven't read the article, but I must say that I can't see any reason why lift passes should be exempt from tax. Do we pay TVA on lift passes in Europe? I've always assumed so.

Ski Lifts are classed as public transportation systems by the EU and thus are VAT exempt in most of the Alps (Not in the UK where the government has decreed that a ski lift capacity is the capacity of an individual carrier not the complete system which belongs to the drive unit - that's like saying a bus only seats 2people because thats the size of the seats! cue rant..... Evil or Very Mad Evil or Very Mad Evil or Very Mad )...

Yes I can see that skiers are not contributing to the local economy and should be made to pay for the privlege of going to one of the highest cost ski areas in the US. I assume of course that all the rooms, rentals, and food services are tax free too.
I can see it now a one season boycott would have them crying for skiers, cheap tax dodgers that we are.

Pretty much sums it up. Looks like greed on behaf of the local authority given the amount of tax tourists already pay.
