Folks
Anyone got any info on skiing in Slovenia?? I know that the skiing is not particularly extensive, or challenging, but thought it might be cool for a long weekend maybe... Any recommendations as to the best place/area to go... where would you fly into also???
I have heard that if you go to Kranjska Gora then you can get a pass that cover resorts in Italy and Austria as well... Not sure which areas tho'

Hi. Was recently on holiday in Croatia and went to visit Kranskja Gora and The Vogel Ski Centre. The Vogel (Bohinj Ski Area), is more difficult to access unless you stay nearby - and there isn't a lot of accomodation. Kranskja Gora looks pretty impressive and is fairly easy to access. If you fly to Ljubljana it would be about 2 1/2 hours drive. Easy Jet fly to Lj. from a London Airport.
I think it would be great for a long weekend. Lots of accomodation, gorgeous scenery, great value and very close to Italian and Austrian Borders.
Both these resorts are on the western top side of Slovenia but I know there are some on the top eastern side such as Maribor.

My family live in southern Austria (Bad Klienkirchheim) which is about 50mins drive from Kranjska Gora. Last winter I drove down there for a day from my parents and really enjoyed it. Its only really a day skiing area but has modern facilities and the Podkoren world cup run is challenging.
If you stay in that area you can visit loads of small Austria and Italian resorts also (you would need a hire car). Ever new year I visit my parents and we ski in a different area every day.
Airports:
Klagenfurt (Ryanair) on the Austrian / slovene boarder
Lubjiana (easy jet) 1 hour easy drive you are in Austria or Slovene ski areas
Trieste (Ryanair) 2 hours motorway to Austria, less in to Slovenia.

I went to Bad Kleinkirchheim a couple of years ago when I was learning to ski again after many non ski years and I found it to be lovely and picturesque. We enjoyed the Thermal Baths in the town/village once that week and that was nice too after being out skiing all day. There was enough there in BKK for all of the levels in our group to be happy with from what I gathered, we flew into Llubjiana airport and it was really easy to get in and out of there, it was nice and quiet as airports go, unlike when we got back into Gatwick 
I've not tried Kranska Gora but have had friends who have learned to ski there because it's cheaper to go than many of the big name resorts. You could spend a week there if you are learning to ski say, but I agree it sounds like it could be a good one for a day or two's skiing for higher level skiers.

I've not been to the former eastern block countries for some time, or Slovenia in particular. How's the infrastructure coping? In the Czech republic everything was rather 'worn' out or 'jerrry' built a few years ago. I know they've made strides to improve, from any recent visits how do they now compare with say, Austria?

Thanks for these replies. I think I will plan a long weekend to Slovenia first. Looks such a lovely place to go but cant get my head into thinking I could ride there for more than a couple of days....

I've been skiing to Slovenia twice, if you search on here you should find a fair bit of info as I've replied to other people and I posted a trip report as well. I've been to Kranjska Gora, Krvavec, Rogla and Vogel and of those Kranjska Gora was definately the most touristy. Krvavec is only about 15 mins from Ljubliana so may be better for a weekend. There is lots of very good websites, in English about Slovenian skiing and the Slovenian tourist info site is very good as well. I have also been to Slovakia, Bulgaria and Romania and while these all felt very different from Western European countries I have visited, Slovenia didn't.

You can ski at the mentioned ski resorts from mid December until mid April. But January to March for sure.

I'm planning on staying near Vogel, and was wondering how good the bus service is to get to the other resorts. We are intermediary skiers with very keen youngers skiers, so I tkink we may have to go from one area to another.
Any tips of day trip itineraries which anyone could recommend?

I stayed near Vogel and went to Kranjska Gora and Krvavec, both were about 1hrs drive I think. Not sure about buses as there was a ski instructor working in the hotel where we were staying who we paid to drive us about for the week. The roads were very well looked after so maybe think about hiring a car?

You can stay at the VOGEL ski resort where is one hotel and allmost no night life. And you can stay in BOHINJ where is a lot of hotels, apartments etc. This would mean for me that you stay "near Vogel". If you are on the VOGEL ski resort, forget about traveling to the other ski resorts. It will take you too much. If you stay in BOHINJ, you can find some busses but again, I believe you will nto be happy as you will probably need to change them and use at least 2 busses. And it is possible that the bus stop is not in front of the hotel/apartment where you are staying. I would recommend renting a car as roads are very good maintained in Slovenia and you are free to visit every day other ski resort in 1 hour drive.
There is one company I know in LJUBLJANA and they organize skiing around Slovenia. They book an apartmnet for you in Ljubljana, pick you at the place in Ljubljana where you stay (if you choose to stay in Ljubljana) rent you skies, pick you at the airport and bring you to the place where you stay, they pick you every day at your apartmnet in Ljubljana and give you a drive to different ski resorts and at the end of the day give you a drive back to your place in Ljubljana. They also organize life in the afternoon in Ljubljana or around. They have also ski school, rent sledges and also organize sledging (night one is very exciting).
