Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

monster 88....... intermediate / advanced?

Dear Snowheads. I've just purchased the head monster 88 175cm. The reason for this purchase is that i've got a big taste for off piste and want to advance further. I realise that this ski is for advanced/expert skier and i want to know if i should get rid of this "impulse" purchase.

Please take into account...................

The skis cost £220 inc ski bag as a ex demo model (excelent condition, couple of minor scratches on the top)

I've been skiing about 8 weeks and seem to be advancing relatively quickly. I'm 6 3 210 lb and fairly athletic.

I can ski blacks (ungracefully) but am working on my technique hard.

At your height and weight I would ignore the label "expert / advanced". You're a big guy and you'll easily master a little ski like that. In fact, it might not be enough of a ski for you? 175cm is pretty small.

II just brought a pair, not sure if he's skied them yet though.

As parlor says, with your physical stats this is too short for you but you can temper that with just 8 weeks skiing which means you will not need anything to impede and hinder your progress.

You should grow out of this size ski pretty quickly (depending on you ) so it should be a stop gap....the ski itself is regarded as good..but you are between being at a stage where you need a forgiving ski and the small size will help..and the need to get the best out of ski by not over-powering it.

At your sixe you should be on mid 180's plus, IMV, for a conventional type ski but you aren't likely to have the ski and technique to be able to ski one that big... It is a fairly assumed compromise at this stage.

Generally, I don't get why people look to ski short skis.... you have to give them a chance... factors like being between lenghts and specialist concepts notwithstanding. You'll get away with it on the piste no problem, but you are just giving yourself problems off it...IMO

JT, it's this false idea that it being shorter makes it easier to turn, I'm guessing, as there is less of it.
