Poster: A snowHead

Picked up some K2 5 Speeds today, they are a carbon fibre glass mix it seems but the top 1/4 feels more like Alu, anyone any experience a)taking the grips of K2 poles and b)cutting them?

Yes.
Take the grips off the pole.
Cut them.
Put the grips back on.
Yes, it's that easy.
Actually, I would also measure where I want the cut to be then wrap a tight layer of wide tape before cutting. Just reduces the chance of the fibres splitting. It's probably unneeded but it just felt so right...

Well, the person's real but it's just a made up name, see?

parlor, How do the grips slide off? Generally get poles the correct size but they cost me nothing so no complaints.

Heat them a bit with a hair dryer to get em off. Hairspray works for sticking them back on.

Anyway, snowHeads is much more fun if you do.

Mosha Marc, i don't envisage the carbon enjoying that.
How long hair drying are we talking"? Sitting here on the floor looking like an idiot with the hair dryer out, been about 5 minutes of heating up and nothing...

arv,
ha ha.... you have to do the poles, not your hair..
Incidently, I have some Salli fibre poles that I can knock out...

arv,
The grips on my 4 Speeds were held on by the screw that retains the strap. They were not stuck on which probably explains why the first time I used them they slipped and have now been glued into place.

JP, if i'm taking the handles off to cut, am I going to be able to put em back on with straps? The straps aren't a big thing for me but i'd rather they were there. What way does the pin slide?

And love to help out and answer questions and of course, read each other's snow reports.

arv,
When I refitted mine I used self tappers, I just re-drilled the pole with a drill just smaller than the screw, but not too small or you risk splitting the carbon, also don't over tighten them.
My poles were shortened by a couple of inches when I bought them with no apparent problem apart from the grips not being glued on.

Whenever I have shortened poles I have taken off straps and put handle in a jug of v hot water for a few mins and they pull off quite easily and then same to put them back on.

You know it makes sense.

Agree with gsb. Thats how we did it in the shop i used to work in. Makes them slide off easy. You don't always need to reheat them to get them back on though.
