I currently wear rear entry boots because i can ski in them and they are very comfy, however bit worried as I have had them for years that they will fall apart eventually. The other reason is that I seem to have proprtionatly bigger calves than most people and find it difficult to do up the top buckle on boots. I am a size 8 so could wear mens or ladies boots
Can you still buy rear entry boots? Can you modify the tope buckle on boots to accomodate larger calves? Is this something you have had done and could you reccomend a shop that would be able to do this?

fizz, i have "prominent calves" - the answer is front entry boots with adjustable buckes at the top. You can get ones which ratchet along to increase or decrease the gap, you can also get ones which have further micro adjustmens on the actual buckle.

fizz, this is a common problem which should be easily resolved, as to how much work is involved depends on how large the calf mucle is
measure with a tape around the calf approx 12" from the floor
1 if the calf is less than 14" around at the top of the boot happy days
2 14"to 17" then it should be easily adjusted in the scope of the clips on most boots
3 17" to 20" then a bit of boot surgery may be required, and you might be more comfortable in a custom liner
4 above 20" clips move, shell modifications and a custom liner for best effect and comfort
definately look towards a ladies boot, the cuff will in most cases be lower than that of the mens boot and many have a flaring setting on the top now to expand the area a bit more

I have just measured calves at 18 inches. Any ski boot fitters in east anglia that you would reccomend?

fizz, No, I went to Lockwoods at Bicester, and CEM was in attendance that day. I woudl make the trip to Lockwoods, or to CEM (esp for custom liner), if I were buying today.

I bought boots with wide calves two years ago - now they are around 16", but I've lost a lot of weight so I could have been similar when I bought them. I went to Skee-Tex at Battlesbridge in Essex. Whilst not having the huge following that CEM has here, I have not found anyone yet who has anything bad to say about them, and to quote one person that recommended them to me 'they were fitting boots when Smallzookeeper and co were still in diapers' so they have plenty of experience. I bought beginners boots - you may need something more specialised, but they had a fair amount of choice and worked with me for best part of 3 hours until I was happy with the fit - they sorted out my wide calves by successive adjustments, and the boots were comfy from the first time I wore them - if you can't make the trip to Bicester to see CEM they may be worth trying.

just be wary of getting them too big, the bigger the boot the taller the cuff, if cambridge is an option go and see Simon at Ski Exchange, he will have some of the custom liners i was taling about soon....all my liners arrive tomorrow

but then your boots will be the least of your worries as your tusks and trunk will keep catching under you skis

I do find the tusks a frequent problem maybe thats what I am doing wrong
