An outdoor ski resort with snow that can withstand heat of around 35°C is being planned for Ras al Khaimah (one of the United Arab Emirates). Sounds ambitious, but it will mean you’ll be able to ski in your swimsuit all year round. The outdoor slope would be the centrepiece of a plan to transform Ras al Khaimah into a year-round venue for winter sports.

Anyway, snowHeads is much more fun if you do.

Was thinking more along the lines of the energy, water and chemicals needed to preserve snow at 35 C.
Oil is going to get a whole lot more expensive.

Might be able to get their energy from solar power.

It must get alot hotter then 35 C in the desert?

That is way cool.
I trust they will ignore the green fundamentalists and build it.
However, the odds of checking out a skidolly in a swimsuit in the UAE, bar an American airbase, are probably close to zero.

Right now here in Saudi it's about 30°C outside, and it's only 8:30am. By 2pm it'll be about 45° C in direct sunlight. And it's not even the hottest part of the year yet (that's August).
This is just a pissing contest between different emirates.

Perhaps it is a stupid place to build this, but the technology could be very useful to lower Alpine resorts in future years.

And love to help out and answer questions and of course, read each other's snow reports.

^ this stuff is going to be filled with chemicals to stop it from melting - do we really want to cover the lower slopes of the Alps (or elsewhere) with that once we've messed up the climate enough to stop snow falling there?
Personally I'd say no!

Am I the only one who thinks this is incredibly daft as you CAN SKI ON SAND ANYWAY!?

You know it makes sense.

you can't eally ski on sand. i tried dune surfing a few years ago. looked great in the brochure but was actually terrible.
agree with the chemical snow debate, unless they have a way of producing it in a non-toxic way. Can't hink how, but there are some clever people out there. Realistically, for the Alps you just need snow that doesn't melt at say 3 degrees (rather than currently zero). Would make a huge difference if it can be done in an enviro friendly way

So because you had a bad experience dune surfing that automatically makes sand skiing not likely? I'm not saying it will be like skiing on snow, but why rape the environment when you have can just find a dune steep enough and ski that?
