Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Cool pics.

Were there any wide-area shots, to assess how much snow is left on the hillside?

Why, people do it most (all?) years? Missed it this year as I had alternative commitments lower down the hill, but skied midsummer two years ago at Cairngorm. Great fun if the weather is good.

Right, but I didn't know that people do it most years, and I'm surprised at the amount of snow in Britain in June, hence my disbelief.

paulio,

And thats one problem Scottish skiing has, as lots of people, many who live reasonably locally, would say the same for the winter aswell as for June. One particular problem is that the best skiable snow in scotland is late in the season, from late february through well into April, but lots of people lok to ski in January and february, and this is often when scotland may have poor snow.

Yeah, but June.

I maintain my stance of disbelief.

They are only snowpatches - about the size of the slope you'd find in a fridge such as Xscape NehNeh so not so massive wink . Until recently a few of the snow patches were permanent, they survived through to the winter (almost) every year. A couple of snowpatches survived last year and hopefully a couple will survive this year aswell, though I doubt the skiable patches will survive in a skiable size much beyond July.

Nope,

There is a snowpatch survey thread on winterhighland here:
http://forum.winterhighland.info/read.php?2,91416,page=2
where one of the guys involved in Adam Watson's snow patch survey has been getting input on surviving snowpatches from the snow and mountain sports community. There was a similar thread last year:

LOL, 'tis true, there's always a trip up for a midsummers ski organised by Winterhighland and highlandinstinct - would love to make it one year snowHead

It's not so surprising this year after the bumper season we've had but those August photos linked to by Lager above are from last year which followed on from a pretty poor 06/07 season so snow does tend to survive up there into at least June/July if not longer - in fact some of the best snow holding slopes are outwith the ski areas. There were even reports of a sprinkling of fresh falling overnight on the tops of the Gorms last week or the week before (I forget which), melted pretty quickly during the day but it can still be very cold up there even at this time of year.

I guess there's not much snow in Brighton then paulio wink

There always has been snow in summer in parts of Scotland - the Munro clan among others has been granted land in return for the provision of snow on midsummer's day, as for example http://www.clanmunro.org.uk/info8.htm relates.

Hi all

Some more pictures of midsummer's day skiing on my flkr site here: http://www.flickr.com/photos/10855010@N08/?saved=1

Great day out, nice to put a few faces to names off the winterhighland forum.

Moving to London on Friday, so it was my last day on the Scottish hills for a while. Sad Need to invest in a season ticket on the sleeper next year.

Nice wee article in the local newspaper, the Strathspey and Badenoch Herald, there's a scan of the print version on Winterhighland here.

Head of Cairngorm Bob Kinnaird has also mentioned it on his blog here.

Nice one! snowHead

It would be a good sized fridge, gps measurements gave about 105m of vertical (344ft), 150m plus vertical done on Macdui and the Spring Run on Meall a' Bhuiridh (Glencoe) on mid summers day.
