Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Roofbars vs Magnetic Ski Carrier

 Poster: A snowHead
Poster: A snowHead
I've got a 2.5 hour each-way drive to Gatwick next weekend. I'm taking my skis in one of those KIS Sportube jobbies which means that, with three passengers plus luggage, I need to get the skis on the roof. With bars I'd just strap the whole shooting match to the roof and go. With the magnetic ski carrier I'd just put the skies up there and carry the tube in the car.

As this is a 200 mile drive with about 180 miles on high speed roads, which would you choose?

Bars - if the skis are then in the box it'll keep the salt off 'em. And you can drive faster without the fear of the magnets moving around and scratching the paintwork.

If you can get the empty tube in the car, can't you get it in with the skis in? (I'm sure there's a good reason, like the box being telescopic.)

I'd use bars, FWIW.

Bars every time. (also, the magnetic ones don't work on all cars)

Yes, they're rubbish on convertibles.

Without wishing to contradict anyone above, my Dad used magnetic ones for years without problem and said he quite liked the flexibility of them.

Bars - cleaning the salt off skis is a pain but worse than that the corrosion that occurs can sometimes cause a lot of damage because it gets into awkward little places that you can't reach and keeps on working away at your skis.

richmond, yes - it's telescopic. The ski box is made of two sections, one sliding inside the other until the skis are held firmly. Without the skis and poles it contracts to about 4 feet long.

I've hired a set of bars from http://www.roofbox.co.uk/ - £40 including return shipping when I get back.
