Well, here it is an apropros term for terrain that is lift accessible, out of bounds, but with little to no hiking involved.
It is where we run into the clueless flatlanders without beacons or shovels, in over their heads.
Also called side-country.
True BC is when there is ~1/2 hour hike, or more.

In other words most of the off-piste, in European terms. (Simply skiing from the lifts off the back of the mountain or the slopes beyond or between the pistes). Most of the people there will have the equipment - bar perhaps some American skiers who don't know it is not avalanche patrolled. (Sorry, couldn't resist that last dig.)

Lift assisted OB skiing, usually not requiring skins but no guarantee.
snowball, Americans know that if it's ungroomed it's European for off-piste, true some forget it also means no avy work.

Still skiing with a lift for at least the next two saturdays and according to the resort both Sat & Sun Memorial day weekend.
Great day today snow set up overnight and softened slowly.

And love to help out and answer questions and of course, read each other's snow reports.

Pinhead, where are you located?
Edit: I did a search, you are near Silver?
Is there really still that deep of a snowpack out west?
Do you ever come out this way?
Targhee and Jackson open the lifts again the second week of June...should be top to bottom still at Targhee, and the upper 2000 ft will be stellar at the Village. (corn cycle permitting, of course!)

jacksonholerider, Used to ski down there but more reliable snow up here in the lowlands of Idaho. The south facing slope has over 3' packed and base is 6' and 100+" at top. My favorite resort is just 2.5 hours from you, mean little hill called Pebble Creek aka the Rock.
Silver remains open as long as 1000 riders show up each Sat and they will be open Sat/Sun Memorial day weekend. Can't believe how great the skiing is, this is only the second Sat with spring skiing the rest have all had fresh Powder, its tough mixing all that snow before the other riders show up. Mtn has been opening at 8 am and you need to be on the gondola from town by 7:30 am to catch rope drop, which is different than first chair at other areas.

If Pebble Creek were just 2000 ft. higher, it would be the most rockin small ski area around.
That place is awesome...but pretty lean in a lot of years.
Rope drop...sounds like a Chinese Downhill!

jacksonholerider, There's a reason the locals at the Rock have rock skis for there and then the good skis for the Mtn are rock skis anywhere else, but incredible slackcountry, 2000' to 3000' vert laps/ hour.
Rope drop can be rather ugly but hey you've multiple directions and lifts to head towards and at 8 am it's not too bad, a powder Sat is a whole different story.
