Poster: A snowHead

We were going to go back to Selva next year as we absolutely love the place but we are thinking of having a change, just for one year, probably Selva again winter 09/10. We are maybe thinking of going to Verbier next year (08/09).
What's it like in terms of area, snow reliability, prices, etc.
Thanks

No, but it throws up all sorts of things about Verbier, including only when people have been discussing it. I am specifically looking for information as per my original posting if that is not too much trouble.

jb1970, I've just done a quick search and have found this. It appears to cover your 'specific' (?) question though, admittedly, not the 'etc' part of it. Hope it helps, anyway.

Huge, great, high, how can we say without knowing what "etc." you have in mind?

Wot he said.
If you give us a bit more info - the type of skiing you enjoy, the level of your skiing, is it a diverse ability group, are you all 20-something party animals or pipe and slippers types then I'm sure we can provide more info.
My knowledge of what the pink pound buys in Verbier, is however sadly lacking

jb1970,
Based on my visits and reputation. The snow record is very good on the north facing slopes but lower and south and west facing slopes can suffer. A lot of the Verbier afficianados don't mind this as the more difficult skiing is the more northern facing stuff at least as far as pistes and itinaires go. Conversly if you are after the gentler stuff a relatively smaller proportion is north facing.
The area is very big but the further you get from Verbier the more dilapidated the lifts. Compared with other alpine resorts it's pretty pricey, never been to Selva but it would suprise me if it wasnt significantly cheaper than Verbier. Most Italian and Austrian places are. If you want to get good value look for a catered option as eating out in the evening is what tends to cost.

Or if nightlife isn't a priority you could stay at le Chable - at the bottom of the main gondola - which is cheaper.
As has been said - it is great for off piste: but it is mostly far from any piste and there are lots of steep slopes so you need a guide. Some years ago we tried to find a guiding company who would put you into a group and we couldn't find one - though possibly the ski-school might do off-piste groups.
Almost all Verbier's famous black pistes Tortin, Gentianes,Col des Mines, Vallon d'Arbi) have been regraded as itineraries - which means they are not groomed. Mont Fort is still terrific though- the right side (as you look down) is steeper but generally has much better snow and no moguls. The back accesses lots of off-piste. Mont Gele is seldom open but very steep when it is.
The trees and glades of Savoleyres (towards La Tzoumas) are good in bad weather/snowstorms.
The resort is quite large and you need to check how far you will be from the main lifts - you don't want long walks. (There are buses going around but sometimes you have to wait quite a while.)

snowball, Monte Gele was open from before Christmas to last sunday this season - only closing when very, very windy.

And love to help out and answer questions and of course, read each other's snow reports.

OK - but the last 2 times I've been there it was never open - and it was only sometimes windy. Perhaps it was to do with snow cover.

More to do with insurance, they renegotiated the deal with their insurers this year- and the snow cover was awesome.
