Poster: A snowHead

Anyone been to Foppolo, Italy ;
Thinking of going there, and will either stay in Carona or Foppolo, looking for advice on where to stay, where not to etc.
Foppolo is linked to Carona- there is a Gondala from Carona, which takes you to the main skiing area. Some piste maps show a piste back down to Carona, some dont. Is it possible to ski to Carona or do we have to take the Gondola down ?
What is the sking like in nearby Piani di Bobbio
Thanks Folks

dublin1, If you do a search on Foppolo you will find the information you need. Haven't been yet but going for a long weekend in February. Staying at the Hotel Des Alpes. Very helpful, they do a price for HB inc lift pass and will pick you up from Bergamo airport too.

Well, the person's real but it's just a made up name, see?

dublin1, went to Foppolo last year. Around 1/2 of the pistes marked on the map didn't actually exist, and from talking to people there, hadn't been around for a few years! Can't recall that it was lift linked to anywhere else.
I presume that you are planning a weekend rather than a week? A week is a long time in Foppolo

Okay, just had a look at the piste map. When we were there the snow was poor, so it certainly wasn't possible to ski down to Carona. I have no idea if there is a piste there or not.

dublin1, I had 5 hours skiing there on a day trip so can't claim to really know it. It seemed really small and in that 5 hours we skied all that was open at least twice. A long lweekend would be as long as I'd want to do there

Foppolo looks really ugly in the summer. So ugly we didn't get out of the car and went back to Bergamo!

I have, I learnt to ski there on a school trip in 1985! It's not a name that crops up very often but not one that you forget either so it's nice to see a thread dedicated to the town.
Roger C, your photo brings back memories, I think that single chair went over into the next valley but was closed due to wind most days. The place doesn't seem to have changed much in 23 years!
Colin B, Hotel des Alpes also rings a bell. I never actually went in as the first group from our trip to venture there for a drink reckoned it was full of unmarried men, so to speak, so we never bothered!
There was a bar near the bottom of the piste with a parrot in it which they claimed was 110 years old, don't suppose it's there anymore or if it is it's probably a different one!
There was a ski race on while we were there, GS or downhill I think. It seemed a pretty high standard with training lasting for what seemed like several days.
Anyway, my info is probably of little use to you as it is 23 years out of date but it would be cool if you could post some pictures on your return as I would live to see how it looks now compared to my memories.
Have a great trip!

jsut back from foppolo was brill weather!! snow was excellent! is more of a resort for learners as the runs are limited but good for a couple of days break
stayed at hotel des alpes a family run hotel food was superb! guy that owns it was a champion skier in his days and is very friendly! staffs english is limited but caused no problem as they always seemed to know what we wanted
resort not recomended for the very experienced skier who likes wide range of slopes
