Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

New Skis

 Poster: A snowHead
Poster: A snowHead
Hey, ive been looking around your site and you guys obviously know your stuff, so i thought i would ask for some advice about finally buying a pair of skis. I have skied for the last 8 years but untill last season its only been the odd week or two each year. Im now lucky enough to get away most weekends. I recently hired a pair of Volki AC30s, 170cm and found them to suit my style, really smooth and responsive. I also found the same with a pair of Atomic Supercross SX9s (174cm) which were really nice at higher speed on steeper pistes, but needed pushing hard. I ski 80% onpiste and the rest messing around offpiste and enjoy carving on a rewarding pair of skis. My height is 176cm and I weigh 65kgs.
Any suggestions?
Thanks Alex.

alex_slann,

I tried the AC30s a couple of weeks ago back-to-back with the K2 Apache Recons. Found the Volkls excellent, disappointed with the Recons. Others to try might be Salomon X-Wing Tornado, Head Monster 78 and Scott Aztec Pro. If you don't get a chance to test more, and are happy with the Volkls, you could do a lot worse IMHO. I'm sure others will be along soon with more recommendations.

Welcome to snowHead

I spoke to a guy on a chair lift in France who brought a piar of these and couldnt have been more dissapointed. He was so upset that he'd 'wasted his money'. Dont know if that helps but ive heard nothing but bad things about these.

Viceversa, You'll never get an "everybody loves them" on any ski. I've only heard good things about the Atomic Nomad Crimsons.

I by contrast am more than happy as an all rounder with off piste bias. that said I have a piste ski for icy days ideally you demo or you buy at a price you won't lose much if you flog em on ebay. I bought em for £245 and guess if I'd hadn't been happy I would have got it back. they ain't going anywhere now though

I'd second the Head Monster 78 to try as a possible alternative to the AC30. Both very good all-round skis. I doubt you'll find anything significantly more capable than these in that class of ski.

I'm same weight as you-bit taller. Try Nomad Blackeye which is an excellent ski. Also the nordica hotrod modifieds, they are 2 seasons old now but have not let me down, go for the 170, the 162 is a bit short for anything not pisted, and anything more than cruising speed.

sorry I should have added Fischer AMC 79 as a one ski do it all. Shoogly got my old pair. I picked up mine for circa £130 from ski bilek new. Edge hold fantastic. very stable. Fat enough for excursions off piste. as i had piste skis I decided to go fatter but well worth a look and possibly you might pick up a new pair cheap on ebay
