Poster: A snowHead

Am beginning to think of next years trips. I am stuck with school holidays, so looking at either feb half term (which is the same week throughout UK in 2009) or easter- which is late. Was considering USA in february, but have noticed that the start of the UK half term is also presidents day weekend - Whilst accomodation obviously more expensive then, I am mainly concerned about the how busy this weekend makes things/crowds etc. Having skied in the US a lot, I see the main advantage of going there is the lack of people compared to europe - but am concerned this advantage is lost over presidents day weekend/week. Any advice??

Depends if you are somewhere with a large city nearby from where large numbers of people can come up for the weekend. I suspect this might mean Vail, Breck etc and Utah resorts get quite busy. I was in Jackson Hole on Presidents w/e in 2007, it was a pretty normal weekend, and there were some good Sales on too. Sure it would be quieter than VdI in half term...

Outside of Xmas Presidents weekend one of the biggest ski holidays in the US even Canadian resorts see the influx. Probably still less than Europe.

Isn't it a bit of a schlep to get there just for a week though? Mind you, we did Whistler for a week last December.

Think you answered this yourself it is awkward to get to but soooo worth it. There is always Killington or stowe on the East Coast? But there are kind of small in comparison to other US resorts

President's weekend is considered peak of peak of the US ski season but there are some addtional points to consider.
Most Seppos don't have the luxury of a full week's holiday
They are often knackered after a couple of days skiing so crowds can tail off even on the Monday and certainly later in the week.
"Local" ski hills rather than "destination" resorts tend not to be as badly affected but caveat re those near major cities which are busy every weekend.
Even at its worst probably doesn't compare to first Sunday of the UK/French half term crossover in a major French resort (except for Whistler maybe)
I'd still choose some other time for preference.
