Poster: A snowHead
|
Came back from skiing on the 26th Feb - no knee troubles whilst out there.
After a few days back knees are sore - feels as if it is over the knee caps.
Is this normal?
It was my first time skiing and I did quite a lot but as I say above my knees were OK whilst away.
Thanks

Tiredness.. you have probably given them such a work-out unlike they have had before.
I'd rest up, keepan eye out and if no better after a week or so...think about getting advice.
No matter how fit you think you are...they are not used to this treatment and it can be that the ligaments take the most abuse

Well for a non skier I did easily 40 - 50 hours over a 2.5 week period some days were flying and other working so I had the odd rest day.
It is a nice reminder every morning what a great time I had but getting a little tired of it now!
I used to do a lot of cycling and my hip, knee and ankle alignment isn't great - used insoles before to help balance it out.
Can you get insoles or custom inserts for ski boots? I have my own boots so I guess a possible solution.
I don't want risk injury's - got 3-5 trips in planning for next season - want to be able to make the mist of it

You can, and IMV should, have foot-beds moulded to your feet. There are snowheads experts such as CEM and SZK who I jhope will drop by and give you more educated advice.

tubbs,
Fitness is a bit of a thing for me atm as I didn't have the time on snow recently I thought I would have or prepared for...and I can't explain that yet.
Being fit is one thing but being ski fit is another. If you coped with the days well enough but only have issues in one place, then that seems to me that those knees got a difernet sort of work-out than they were used to. I am not surprised by that.

I used to get really sore knees - especially in the area at the bottom of the knee cap to the top of the shin. I think that it was caused by too much foot steering putting too much rotational pressure in the area. I've started steering using my knees and thighs alot more now and the problem is much reduced.

it doesn't sound like a fitness issue. tubbs, are your knees swollen at all? ie, are they a bit puffy and warm?

Sore knees are a common post ski holiday experience for me. Although I've never had any long lasting pain or knee problems. It's been usually a little stiffness in the morning for a week or so, that sort of thing. A bit of rest and then normal exercise (I do a fair bit of mountain biking over the summer) usually fixes them.

JT, is right - the kneecap essentially 'floats' or tracks over the ends of the thigh bone and lower leg bones, so it may be the back surface has got a bit inflammed with all this unusual new movement you did. Like cycling, lots of repetitive movements...hope it is settling down

After skiing this year my right knee was quite sore. I had torn some of the cartlidge a few years back (its in the hollow just above the shin joining the knee and on the inside).
Well I should have rested it but I did an hour on the exercise bike first weekend back. I spent the next 2 weeks limping and now I am trying to strengthen it up with weights and wear a knee support whilst at the gym.
I had actually strained it during 2 silly falls that left me cross legged!
Rest it is my advice!
