Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Recommended Resorts 2-3 Hours from Vienna

 Poster: A snowHead
Poster: A snowHead
I am going to Vienna in mid March for business and would like to ski for two or three days. Can you recommend a resort? It would have to have good beginner and intermediate terrain as well as advanced terrain for my wife and myself.

This is my first post here. (I posted this message on epicski and someone suggested that I cross-post to this site.)

If you have recommendations on a hotel, that would be relatively economical but nice, offering the classic Austrian ski experience (that goes for the resort too) that would be helpful.

I was originally thinking of taking public transportation, but the responses I received on epic seem to point in favor of renting a car instead.

Thanks for your help.

Tom,

I would say Schladming should fulfil all your requirements.
By car it is about 3 hours away from Vienna (on very good and modern roads) and it offers a wide variety of runs, from easy to expert level.
Furthermore though it is one of the lower resorts in Austria (~800m) the local cold climate combined with state of the art snow making equipent should guarantee good snow conditions in March. Schladming is every year among the first resorts to open and they sometimes start snowmaking already at the end of September!
Schladming itself is a traditional Austrian Town with a lovely historic centre and a decent nightlife. I cannot help you with hotels because I've only been to Schaldming on day-trips but there are several Schaldming threads in this forum.

You also have the option to take the train to Schaldming (there is a train station in the centre) but the journey time would be a little more than 4 hours.

Rgds,

I am having a hard time finding a hotel in Schladming for two nights in mid-March. Any suggestions?

Tom Orwell, I';m guessing that you're based in north america? In europe, the skiing is much more week long (sat-to-sat, usually) and as such many hotels are reluctant to offer breaks of less than 7 days until as late as possible. You might get more possibilities if you are prepared to stay a little further away from the slopes, e.g a 15 / 30 minutes drive away. never been to austria so can't help with specifics

Tom Orwell, if Schladming doesn't work for you, you could also try Semmering & Stuhleck - pass-linked & rather closer to Vienna. The terrain might not suit, neither of those really has advanced skiing, but excellent for beginners & inters. I don't know about accom as I have family nearby, but I have always found the local tourist offices in Austria extremely helpful - you should be able to link to them from the resort websites. Have fun! snowHead
