Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Recommendations for good long john base layer please?

Have just bought new kit (silver lining to the cloud of failing to lose the extra baby pounds 3 years on Embarassed Very Happy ) and wondering if I have made a mistake as I went for non-insulated shell only and always had insulated before Confused
I am pretty sure I will be ok on top as the jacket is zip-in compatible and I got a good fleece for it. But its my legs I am worried about as I have previously worn base layers and insulated pants. So I am looking for a recommendation for warm ones? I have seen microfleece leggings around too, do I get some of those to wear base + fleece legging +pants?? Or will I be ok with a decent base layer? I was a bit swayed by hubby who wears shell only no base layers whatever the temperature and he's fine.
Thanks a lot snowHead

Damart or M&S. Or you could always get suckered into paying £60 for a pair with the 'right' label if you prefer. Laughing

Well, the person's real but it's just a made up name, see?

Mountain Warehouse's own brand Parallel were on BOGOF offer for £20 a couple of weeks ago. I have a pair of these and they came into their own under my jeans in the evenings, but I didn't need them skiing.

Patra pure silk long-johns? I tend to reckon if they're OK for Everest, they're fine for the Alps

I don't always wear bottom baselayer, but if I do I wear Helly Hansen and they're fine. We all use them now, kids included. Reasonably priced and available in Millets etc now too as well as specialist shops.
http://www.bigbluemountain.com/ have always been good, they have a sale on now (may not have all sizes etc left but worth a look)

If you've a pair of Ron Hills lying round the house you can cut the bottom 1/3 off and use those.

Works great for me.

Thanks for all the suggestions! Lizzard, There's a Damart shop near me so I will look there. Helen Beaumont, I do the rounds of TKMaxx but haven't struck lucky so far on the long johns, except I found out the other day that all base layers are now on hangers in the clearance section rather than in the boxes to save space. Butterfly, Cheshire Oaks branch had only tops left yesterday and not on BOGOF now either. Lou, will try there then too. eng_ch, pure silk sounds a bit pricey?? Mosha Marc, no RonHills sadly. Thanks a lot guys snowHead

sarah, I have some Lowe Alpine ones, still going strong after seven years, there's glamour for you. The last Helly Hansen ones I tried weren't very stretchy though they may well do different types. I'd also recommend Icebreaker merino base layers, the top I had was pretty much indestructible. I wear unpadded trousers and the Lowe Alpine tights in all weathers and haven't got cold yet...I do like the sound of silk, though! I wonder how hard-wearing it would be...

 snowHeads are a friendly bunch.

I have HH, they end up smelly and aren't that comfortable. (itchy) I have TNF which have proven to be very good, and not smelly. I also have Skins which are quite good but not tried them skiing yet just for walking, again not smelly. I also have Icebreaker and these seem to be VERY VERY good. Again, only used for walking so far but will be wearing skiing in a weeks time. They are comfortable, cosy, don't itch, don't smell and retain their shape. I would say from my experience of all the different types if base layers I've had i would def. recommend the merino wool ones. They don't have to be Icebraker but they must be MERINO wool to have the same characteristics I've described above.
