Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

The state-of-the-art (and history) of snow-kiting

 Poster: A snowHead
Poster: A snowHead
We ran a news item the other day on the upcoming snow-kiting event in Obertauern in February. Here's a feature on snow-kiting (the capture of wind to pull you across snow) in a very different part of the world: a frozen poorly-drained lakebed (playa) in Oregon.

In this instance a snowboard is being used to cross the expanse, but get this:
Quote:
Snow kiting has been used in a primitive form for hundreds of years for transportation across the vast snowfields in the Arctic. Locally, old-timers tell of using bed sheets, tying two corners to their ankles and knotting the other corners to hang onto while ice-skating on the frozen playa east of Cedarville.

This report from Herald and News, Klamath Falls, Oregon.

Well, the person's real but it's just a made up name, see?

Snow-kiting is popular on the Col du Lautaret (westerly entrance to Serre Chevalier). Every time we've driven by we slow down as there is usually a significant number of participants. Looks great fun.

An old friend of mine was instrumental in the wider intruduction of kite-jumping (not dissimilar in some regards) in the UK back in the 80's. Although it had been around for a while, he was involved with marketing and demonstrations etc.
