Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better!
Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

A snowHead
I am researching winter traction options for a forthcoming drive to the Alps. I have heard a vague rumour that a new type of snow "chain" is being sold in garages in Val d'Isere made out of ?kevlar? that is much easier to fit but google is not revealing any more info.
Does anyone have a clue what I'm talking about???

Any review I've read of them has not been complimentary.
Well, the person's real but it's just a made up name, see?

I think they should have a better performance than the socks.

, don't know about the kevlar. We have Konig "Super Magic" chains, quite widely sold in France I think, which are considerably easier to put on and - equally important - take off. There's a thing you pull, to release the catch at the back of the wheel, when you take them off. Does make life a lot easier, and they're quite strong too. They were a bit more expensive - around 90 euro I think - but we use them a lot and it was worth the extra money.
The key thing, though, is to practice. I practice before going out to the Alps every year and can generally get them on in a couple of minutes flat. It's good to know you can do it easily, because the temptation otherwise is to leave it too late.
Anyway, snowHeads is much more fun if you do.

, 'Socks' certainly are not acccepted in place of chains by the Police in Val Thorens. We watched a French Guy putting their case to the Police at their 'Chain check' just outside Les Menuires. He was not allowed to continue up to VT.
