Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Injuring an injury

7 days ago I slipped and fell on ice carrying skis and boots and landed on my elbow. Photo here: http://snowheads.com/ski-forum/viewtopic.php?t=36511&start=4
I haven’t broken anything but the bruise is severe and it’s still sore if I touch the lump which is present about 3” down from my elbow. I have resisted going skiing since it happened as it was too sore but now I want to go. What will happen if I fall on said arm apart from being f’ing sore?

II, I had a horrendous bruise from falling on the ice rink in Chamonix (where I had only gone because the snow was rubbish). I had to rest up the next day - couldn't even get my jeans on over the swelling. The whole leg went all colours. I did ski the last day, slowly and a bit painfully. I figured that as it was only bruised, it would just be f'fing sore if I fell. The bruising took months to clear, and the swelling was there for months too. Not been ice skating since. Ice sucks. Never done anything as nasty on the snow.

II, Ouch! That's a splendid bruise!
It's an absolute given that you will fall on the same arm in exactly the same place Twisted Evil And it will really hurt. But it's well worth it... just go skiing again, you know you want to! snowHead

(Spoken from experience, btw - I had a very nasty fall on my hip on a rocky/icey piste over a year ago, & I've still got a lump there. 'Fat necrosis', I believe it's called - at least it's not a floating bit of bone, which was my initial thought! And it's like it's got some magnetic attraction to the ground, especially any patches of boiler-plate ice... if I'm going to go, I just know which bit is going to hit first...)

II, If it's only bruising with no or little loss of arm strength and mobility and you're at a ski resort right now then get yourself one of those combined fore-arm and elbow protectors and go for it. Being on holiday and not skiing due to a bruise, assuming it's only that, is a waste. The first time I went skiing I missed the last day of skiing-ski school-beginners race day because of a little man-flu. To this day I regret not skiing on the last day and doing a timed run.

II,

Get it looked at! I paid the price many years ago for ignoring a footballing injury and now only have 3.5 (if that!) quads in my left leg as a result!!! I'll spare you the gory details but lumps and bumps which suddenly appear are worth getting advice on. One cannot be too careful!

I am not sure you can bruise a bone as such, but that sort of direct blow bruise can takes ages to come out....

I'd stay off it as much as poss and another blow isn't going to help it hea...l

JT, You can bruise a bone - and it hurts like nothing on earth, because there's generally no swelling to relieve the pressure. Mostly it will happen when some sort of impact causes one bone to bash against another (so e.g. ankles vulnerable). Even intravenous painkillers and anti-inflams didn't help when I did it!

II, lots of ice and then gentle massage to start breaking down the blood under the skin. Not a bad idea to get it checked out either.
