In another thread, a suggestion was made that the size of a skiers bar bill was not relevant to the cost of equipment, since some skiers might be teetotal. Apart form children, are there many? My experience (with the notable exception of one outstanding instructor) is that skiers tend to drink like fish.

My guests aren't drinking like fish this week, much to my disgust. Last week's didn't either, but they were a bunch of weirdos and don't count.

philw, I can't. I can see why people might limit their alcohol consumption to avoid losing too much fitness, but knocking off altogether seems obsessive. To deny onself a decent glass of wine or a decent pint of beer for the sake of some unquantifiable but undoubtedly miniscule improvement in performance is a shame.

If drinking affects your fitness, I'd hate to see what I'd be like if I tried to keep up with the lardies apres ski!

I guess it relies on their obsession to keep fit/win races etc... A good friend of mine used to drink like the proverbial fish, but after stopping drinking for a few weeks saw the improvement in his fitness and gave up completely!

I might have a beer to go with the meal. This is the same everywhere, at home, for work-related or skiing.
I drink only to socialise. Never enjoy the stuff myself. Usually one drink for the whole evening. I possibly use more alcohol in cooking than drinking it. Whisky or Brandy does magic to a piece of meat in the oven.

saikee,I would echo your post.
I dont know why people think that to have a good holiday (skiing or sun) they have to rack up the €'s on booze. If you want to drink a lot it would be better to do it at home in your local! I am sure that it would be cheaper! I would drink maybe a little more than at home but would much prefer to enjoy the mountains the following day with a clear head. I do drink and am not anti alcohol in any way but dont need it to enjoy myself, can dance on tables without booze.

I'm on the weekday wagon these days for fitness reasons, and it's going surprisingly well. I do feel a lot better for drinking less, there's no denying it.
A friend of mine once described Chamonix as "a town full of alcoholics addicted to sport" but I do know quite a few people there who don't drink much.

That crossed my mind when I posted, but I decided that it was possible to know whether something is large or small without knowing how big it is. For example, I have no idea how heavy the moon is, and without using Google or some other resouce no way of determining that. I know that it is (even) heavier than me, however.

richmond, I may be wrong but I understood miniscule to mean the smallest measurable amount, and so something that is miniscule is by definition also quantifiable.

Kramer, I think you are, although it should be 'minuscule', apparently (edit: as Laundryman and alex heney told us). 'Erroneous variation', the OED calls 'miniscule', which sounds rather sniffy.

Eh?
Very few top racers are tee total. One famously won the Hahnenkamm after being out all night.

I am certainly not a regular drinker of alcoholic beverages. The odd small glass as we cook Sunday lunch if we remember and that's it. If I'm out at night or want a special drink I'd choose a fruit juice out of choice just on taste alone. I actually had to teach myself to be able to drink something alcoholic by pre-telling brain what it was about to taste like. Now I can drink most things (except foul things based on aniseed which are just revolting - and tea flambe which tastes like liquorice based cough mixture) on that basis, but I don't think I enjoy any of them as much as a fruit juice.
