The ski mountains of the High Tatras in Slovakia, and some ski areas of Austria, have been hit by destructive snowstorms and windstorms over the weekend.
High winds forced authorities to shut a gondola lift at St Gilgen, near Salzburg. Buildings have been damaged in Graz and Vienna. In Moscow, the snowfall - an average of 22cm - was equal to the normal monthly total for November...
If skiers can get to the ski areas near the city they'll enjoy some great conditions, but the chief concern is clearing the streets of snow.
In Slovakia, the Tatras saw widespread damage to forests.

This picture gallery can be found on the site of the Slovakian daily called Pravda.
It is unbelievable what the wind did in four hours. The slopes in the High Tatras are buried with the remains of the trees.
The start of the ski season or even the whole season seems to be questionable according to the officials.

These pictures here make us cry here in Eastern Europe.
Just take a look at the first one. It looks as if someone had laid a huge iron carpet on the whole forest forcing the trees onto the ground.
And this 'carpet' was 15 km long and 3 km wide. Natural disaster.
It will take a century for this area to recover.
This is Stary Smokovec, ski resort in the High Tatras after hit by a 100-150 km/h wind for four hours.

kerekip, a belated welcome to snowHeads. And what amazing pictures. Some years back we had a storm across southern England (can't remember which year) which we thought was pretty devastating, but it was nothing like yours. The pictures suggest most buildings survived intact. Is that correct?
