Poster: A snowHead

Right guys, I may be spending my winter in Le Clos St Savin. What do you know about it? I can't find any information on the quality of the skiing, but apparently there are vacancies there for work, I am waiting for a reply to an email to see if I get the job!!

As far as I can see it's in Font Romeu. Have you checked out this ski domain?

Just booked to go to the area next Feb. Been there in summer, but not winter. Font Romeu is smallish, loaded with cannons and is meant to have the most sunshine in France. The skiing is on a plateau (ummm....OK) a few KM from the village. The good news is that you can get a Neiges Catalane pass which covers nine smallish resorts <40km each in the area. I would guess you'd need a car. There's meant to be good touring and off piste, with a specialist telemark company up the valley in Ax. Not much nightlife, skiing mostly families and beginners/intermediates. If you have a day off you can scoot down to Perpignan or Collioure and have a swim in the Med if you're still there towards Easter. My mum was there last week and reported 25 degrees in the shade (down near the sea).
There's more information on the backcountry side of things over at pistehors, and bits of anecdotal stuff at goski.
Let us know how you get on!

michael stocking, thanks! It doesnt look like a huge resort by any means, however that has its advantages... do you know whether it is really a 'French' resort or if its mainly dominated by the brits? I'm looking to advance my french you see!

No, the whole area is really French. I think some Spaniards come over the border at the weekend, but it's pretty much off radar for most Brits. Friends of mine who live in the area either go to Font Romeu, or, if they want more extensive skiing, slip over into Andorra, which is really close by. I think if you want a low key winter, getting to know some locals, improve your French, improve your skiing, and maybe get into some touring/off piste you'll have a great time. If you're going to miss endless discussions about property prices, middle class parents braying into mobile phones, thumping nightlife, vodka redbull till your eyes bleed, aggressive queues for the lifts and overpriced drinks, then maybe think again.....

plym, sounds good. If you want to improve your skiing you're definitely better off in a smaller resort, that way you repeat some runs many times, and can concentrate on your technique.
Being a very French area, your language skills should improve hugely, and you'll probably find there's loads of off piste available once you get to know a couple of locals who can show you where.
Good luck getting the job, and (asuming you do) have a great season.
