Is it possible to purchase a lift pass from a lift station to be used for the next days skiing?

That depends on the resort, and in some cases on the period for which you want the pass.
Some resorts have always allowed you to buy (and use) multi day passes fairly late in the afternoon of the day prior to the supposed start of validity.
With modern hands free passes that have the validty recognised automatically at the turnstiles, I would expect most resorts using that type of pass to allow purchase the previous day, even for single day passes.

Well, the person's real but it's just a made up name, see?

When we went to the Atomic Boot camp in Tignes, our passes must have been purchased the previous day as we were handed them very early the next morning and some got them the night before. That was for 3 days skiing.

I must admit thefatcontroller, i presumed we would be able to buy our passes the afternoon the day we arrive (if the lift pass desk is still open) so we can be up and ready to go straight out the next day.
If remember in Tignes you can get your pass from a machine and start it which day you like.
We are based in les houches if anyone can advise what I can do there.

I've always been given my ski pass the day before skiing commences (we have bought from the rep on the coach transfer, the pass is then delivered to your hotel that evening or given to you at breakfast the next day).
Most places tend to use new fangled chip cards now, so if it's all computerised I don't see why you can't buy your pass the day before skiing.
In fact, I'm off to La Plagne this year, and it seems you can buy your pass on the internet prior to travel, and have it delivered to your home address!

Yup... its usually best to get it the night before as you avoid the morning rush... You'll have to check what time they start selling passes for the next day (might be after 3 or 4pm) and, of course, what time the shop shuts!
